@gembo - a very good point. I was forgetting that I actually missed most of the climb and only tuned in to the second (last) attack. Cheers for putting me right!

@arobcomp, Nairo attacked early on the last day too but was reeled in. Froome was shattered at the end of the last climb but he held on. If there was a climb the next day I think he might have struggled but Sky had managed everything well.

Though it's bizarre because Movistar took the best team prize!

He certainly lost a big chunk of time in the crosswinds, and being on the wrong side of the split, but if he hadn't been distanced there's nothing to suggest the race would then have gone the exact same way for every stage after that, so Froome might still have won, or Quintana might have danced away n the mountains. Should be interesting next year if both are still at the top of their games, and if Bertie decides not to ride the Giro just before the Tour, and Porte starts fulfilling some potential leaving SKY, and Pinot and Bardet learn from this year's experience, and Barguil starts to mature (and would be great if Thomas got a lead in another team, but there you go). I think the Nibbler might be a spent force, despite his great stage win.

It has to be said, this is terrible viewing. The peloton are trundling along while the four giddy types extend their lead to nearly six minutes. It’s not much of a spectacle, even with the awesome natural backdrop. Go out and enjoy your Saturday, would be my advice if I didn’t value your company. Mind you, with 85km left, the fearsome Col de la Croix de Fer looms just 30km away so maybe things will start getting interesting around then.Tour de France: stage 20 – live!

Oh yes Thor checking himself nicely unlike warren, who as WC points out was too fast wrong line again three corners further down. Maybe being too harsh as it is very scary with millimetre room for error at the speed they are going.

With Thor stopping himself going over the wee wall down the ravine on the cormet de roselend it is time to revisit the similar wee wall on the same descent which has Johan written on it. I cycled passed this twice in 2013. At slow pace I was descending still scary as wet but seemed hard to imagine how Johan Bruyneel managed it in 1996. He actually misses the wall else he would have been very badly off and kind of cycles down the gap between the wall and the trees. He climbs back up sixty feet looking quite dirty and indeed dazed but is just looking for another Bike and off he goes.

Indeed, Eurosport is first choice if watching a full stage. I miss David Duffield's many excursions into the word of cheese. I feel I no longer have a sufficiently deep understanding of the different cheeses from the various regions of France any more.

I have some sympathy for Barguil here - before the shoulder bump from "TJ" (which at 70kph on an uneven road would, I suspect, have potential to make you screw up your braking). It's not on the clip above, but Barguil was originally in front of TJ in the line; Barguil moved a little out of the line to the right as they swung through some minor twists in the road and TJ moved forward to occupy his space, so when Barguil went to get back in the line he was shepherded/bumped to right in the run up to the worst corner on the entire descent.

The correct response was possibly to lock-up the brakes, but I'd imagine that those sorts of instincts have been trained out of most pro-cyclists. Hopefully it will teach Barguil to keep his line on descents rather than bob all over the road...

Astonished that G came out of that unscathed, but I guess all that practice in crashing he has had over the past few years is starting to pay off... ;-)

Saw the contact loads on the live coverage, then the highlights, still not convinced it's a serious enough contact to make you lose control of your braking. Doubtless contact, still think he was heading in there too hot (and like I say, did almost exactly the same thing a couple of corners later).

As it is, any views of us as armchair critics is meaningless really - glad no-one was hurt, and Geraint is still ahead of Barguil in the standings ;)

No, but losing control of one's brakes *does*. Especially when travelling at 80km/h.

@the boy any contact did not make him go too fast. Everyone else slowing on the corner but warren speeding up.

Geraint not happy. But when asked his name and date of birth he said Chris Froome.

"wouldn't have received quite the same amount of attention on the telly if it hadn't been a Brit who was hit.... ;)"

Doubtless true, but it was rather spectacular....
