Indeed.

The culture and political will are certainly not here - (yet??!)

Lets look at how Copenhagen (and every other place that has high cycling levels) achieved the growth in cycle usage. It is very simple, they restricted use of motor vehicles.

As for the plastic hats, there has been very aggressive marketing of them (backed in some cases by the motor industry) over the last five years. This has not just been in Denmark, but is other countries too.

The population comparison is even better (in favour of Copenhagen). The city of 0.5m has more cycling than the country of 319m (638x bigger). Assuming the cycling stats are correct...

63% of MPs cycle daily. Nuff said.

I think the most striking thing of all, is all of that seems to have happened in less than 25 years!

I've been cycling into Edinburgh for that amount of time, and erm...

Shows what can be done if you have the political will.

*Edit, would also be interesting to know how cycling has evolved country wide in that period.

Going by the pictures there's a far higher number of helmet users than in The Netherlands.

4 out of 5 have access to a bike (I assume this doesn't include rental schemes) and there are 650K bikes for 520K people. Looks like the average resident has settled for 1.5 bikes.

There's a slightly odd slant on helmets, no?

"How many people have you heard of dying in a cycling collision (that didn’t involve a car)? As long as both parties wear helmets, you can crash into each other for days and get a few broken bones at worst."

55% of the (applicable) citizens cycle to work or school. For the record, that means there are more people cycling to work/school in JUST Copenhagen than there are people doing that in the entire USA. That’s right, this one city has more bicycle commuters than a country with a population 160 times bigger.

Wow!

"

Hi,

I was searching for some info about bike friendly cities and ended up at your site.

Having seen http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/, I was thinking that maybe you want to see the infographic we have made about the many bikes in Copenhagen.

In our infographic, we take a look at everything you need to know about Copenhagen as a bike friendly city: http://www.icebike.org/bike-city-copenhagen-this-is-the-ultimate-bicycle-friendly-city/

We are a bit proud of it, so I hope you will like it too - and maybe it's worth a mention on your site?

Thanks,
Mads Phikamphon
