In Dunfermline at the moment on the aptly named Carnegie Drive one half of a two stage crossing is out of action. No reason given but a Fife Council sign stuck over the button saying "Crossing not in use". Of course with plenty people getting to the middle of the road before finding the sign the crossing was very much in use.

It's something I've noticed almost every time TTLs are put up where there's a Pelican crossing nearby- The pedestrian crossing lights are invariably switched off and pedestrians are left to fend for themselves and left to the mercy/whims of motorists. (You know the thing , motorists tend to leave gaps or wave other motorists through at obstructions or when traffic is tailed back, but don't as a rule do the same for cyclists.)

The strange thing is there doesn't need to be any temporary lights at this junction. The hole in the road is only about 1m x 2m.

Block off the right turn lane heading west, eastbound traffic can use that lane.

Very bad tonight, all the way from Cowgate though I Sussed that the four way had gone red just as I arrived so I could become a pedestrian at the actual junction.

I passed through yesterday and again today as a pedestrian. The traffic flows across the junction were slow, and the gadgies manually running the lights were creating decent spaces for pedestrians to cross the road.

My main concern was the number of signs placed on the pavement.

I don't think the requirement for pedestrian crossings at roadworks lasting more than 7 days has been added to the roadworks manual - although it is approved. Well done to Chas Booth (?) for pushing this.

This road was resurfaced a month or two ago. As with other areas in Edinburgh the resurfacing seems to generate more faults - like Castlehill.

They were re-laying the surface of one lane on London Road at Meadowbank (between the shopping centre and McDonalds) for the last 2 weeks. Work took place only during the day and not at all on Saturdays. During working hours, a contraflow was in place and - apart from when the surface was removed for relaying - the contraflow and lights were packed away at the day end, returning the road to normality.

But.

The pedestrian crossing has been out for the duration of the works. The works are now complete, bar line painting, and have been in the vicinity of the crossing for about a week. The crossing is still out.

It remains to be seen if I get a response to my tweet and fixmystreet.

Mmm Lady Lawson Street.

That'll be the one where they have been 'planning' to put in a contra-flow cycle lane past the Art College for over 30 years.

Didn't manage to do a TRO to coincide with the recent complete resurfacing.

So maybe by 2050??

Monday night the tailback was down cowgate to dynamic earth. Not so bad last night. This morning stuck whilst the whole fourways system went through its cycle. Pedestrians seemed able to cross. Obvioulsy, not without risk. Looks like cabling judgiong by all the holes. not the surface, which is nice. Apparently in Germany, so the story goes, once you dig the hole, all the different utilities comply with the one timescale. But this type of organisation is not possible in UK.

This is the thread that discussed the criteria for putting in temporary ped crossings:

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=11457

(Supposed to be all works that last over a week and are 'busy' enough. I love the idea that endangering pedestrians for up to six days is somehow ok but after that we should help them out)

What are they doing there again? Presumably someone found something urgent to address, now that the nice new surface they put in a couple of months back has come to the end of the maximum period for which any smooth, flat surface can so remain.

There are currently four way lights on the crossroads of Lady Lawson Street and West Port, and they are causing traffic 'chaos', with cars scattered everywhere, big queues, even saw someone last night mounting a central reservation to turn (some distance from the crossroads) and escape the melee.

But while drivers caught in it may / will complain about the works (how anyone thinks anything gets done or maintained without some disruption I'll never know) you've got to love how pedestrians are treated, and it demonstrates the true hierarchy. Because while it would undoubtedly make the works quicker and easier to carry out simply by shutting the route to traffic, they bring in traffic management systems to ensure at least some remaining flow.

The pedestrians however? Well at all four roads there are traffic lights with pedestrian crossings. All four have been turned off, and all four have signs that simply say 'Crossing Not In Use'. Seen them loads before, and it really irritates me. No alternative temporary lit crossing, no guidance as to where might be safe to cross, just 'ye cannae cross here' (or 'if ye dae on yer ane heid be it'.

(and anyway, wasn't that Festival roadworks amnesty thing supposed to have kicked in, and that's why tools have been down on the Meadows to Innocent route?)
