These kind of tales always remind me of this - When I first read it at school it made little sense... much more now.

Started in 2006 by Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, it now has 36 studios.

And it is already profitable, making $25m profit last year on sales totalling $112m.

Ignoring the odd decision to start a paragraph with and why does Auntie find it so surprising that a ten year old business should be profitable.

One of Asimov's short stories is about a child having to walk to school one day because his house's teleport is broken, finding it pleasant (to his mother's initial dismay, particularly when he's late or gets wet/grubby) and making it a habit.

There's another about people re-learning how to manually draw numerals with a pencil, then re-learning how to perform arithmetic without using a computer.

@wingpig - to give this some historical context this was in January 2002 - I think the police were in general very jumpy…. the reason they gave was the lack of "sidewalks" meaning it was unsafe for me to walk there...

Did they give a coherent reason why, or did they just loom sunglassedly at you with their hands on their sidearms' butts until you complied?

Time enough for hell when we're dead, eh?

my thoughts entirely… I once got escorted back to my hotel in Florida by the police for walking to the beach while at a conference. The irony seems the same as this - many people in their houses on walking machines looking at me like I was the weirdo.

The 45 minute long classes are set in a dark, candlelit room with high energy music blasting out.

Time enough for hell when we're dead, eh? I cycled over Maidens' Cleugh yesterday for free and felt much better as a result. Not sure it's a scaleable business model mind, or that I could persuade Naomi to join in.

SoulCycle, the US indoor cycling fitness chain which has gained a cult following in the US, plans to float on the stock market.

Seems there's a lot of money to be made getting people to drive their giant vanity SUVs to sit in an air conditioned gym on an exercise bike. At $45 an hour that's not a surprise!
