I think it was The Villager - great all-day breakfast. Also did burgers, steak sarnies, pancakes. Easy to leave bikes outside too.

True, second guess, between Ceres and Falkland is the Muddy Boots farm shop at Balmalcom. THe farmwer makes the best tablet in Scotland. Official.

Third and correct guess The Villager

"managed to take a wrong turn at Dalgety Bay, onto the coastal path too early - lots of steps."

Managed to do that too on Tuesday - only coming from Burntisland.

Route is a mix of Fife Cycle Route and Coastal Path. Generally well signed, but clearly not well enough to make a conscious choice at whichever point we didn't notice the recommended cycle part turning away.

Walking route kept to the coast much better - worth a small amount of pushing.

Thanks folks.
The day started with my friend cycling from her cousin's place in Dundee to the station - but accidentally ending up on the road part of the Tay Bridge. Not the best start. She came back over the cycle path, and all was well after that - apart from ending up cycling through fields in the Tentsmuir Forest.
Leuchars to Markinch was lovely. Quiet roads, nice climbs with good views. We stopped in Ceres for lunch at a brilliant cafe.
Glenrothes to Kirkcaldy was decidedly less lovely. As is said above, narrow painted paths next to very bust roads. Lots of trucks.
I managed to take a wrong turn at Dalgety Bay, onto the coastal path too early - lots of steps.
It was a comedy of errors, but lots of fun.

@twq ditto what the others say about the actual coastal path, better to ride through Aberdour, Dalgety Bay and onto Inverkeithing. I might also avoid cutting through Glenrothes. With it being a 'new-town' it's very car centric, wide roads, fast speed limits. Better to cut down towards Coaltown of Balgownie. The esplanade through Kirkcaldy is also fine as an option and turn left at the Morrisons.

We did Dundee to Edinburgh on the costal path. Not fun really and the bits where we diverted to the road were not fun.

@twq - Although I haven't cycled it a lot of people don't recommend the coastal road for cycling from Inverkeithing to Kirkcaldy.

A quieter route might be up through Crossgates then along to Kirkcaldy that way? As I said I haven't cycled it before and just offering some comment based on some posts I read on here.

I think the 'don't recommend' bit comes from the narrow-ish roads through the villages and the drivers are not the best behaved along that route (from my experience of being a driver and witnessing some poor cyclist passes).

There's a few ways to do that route. Official NCN1 will bring you all the way down (plenty links on here. You can also go through A914, Balmullo, Cupar, Leven thru to Dunfermline and then FRB which is the route I took and mostly direct.

Anyone cycled Dundee to Edinburgh recently? I'm looking for a nice quiet route, will be cycling with a friend who has a heavy bike. I'm trying to figure out whether to take the roadie, or the cross bike. Probably cross for carrying and comfort utility.
