Went up to Kinross and attempted the route up and around the hills. The first 10km was lovely and very fun but it started getting rather technical for the other half. So we turned back and did a loop of Loch Leven. A lovely ride for all involved. 40km in the end. Very impressed with the other half. I'll make an audaxer of her yet!

You can, via Glen Tanar. I shall lend you this book if you are to engage in this enterprise.

Was looking at this route from Kinross:
http://www.mtbtrails.info/Trail_Venue_Map_TrailViewer.aspx?VenueNumber=109&TrailNumber=156&Unique=635763455362720153

Anyone tried it - any ideas if it'd be ok on CX bikes rather than MTB?

I now have Mount Keen on my To Do List before my Dad moves out of Forfar.

Does the wisdom of CCE/Kaputnik/IWRATS extend to knowing if you can cycle down the north side towards the A93?

we did some bits of the ardgarten loop last autumn and enjoyed it quite a lot. some of it's quite hilly though (by our standards, with kids).

The Tour de Forth has some stretches which are best suited to a cross bike although perhaps slightly too long on the bike and not far enough away for what you are looking for.

Some of the higher roads in the Fintry hills are certainly better on a cross bike than a road bike but are technically not "off road".

Offroad other than a bit of loch Rannoch and a mile or two at Feshie Bridge.

You win CCE for today. Great idea - it is indeed cycleable.

I believe it's possible to cycle up Mount Keen, which is a Munro, and probably the only place you can easily cycle up a Munro. You can approach from the south from Tarfside, which is beyond Edzell, a bit northwest of Montrose. It's largely forestry/firetracks so suitable for CX.

Quite a drive but certainly one to chalk off?

Glen Tilt?
Route 7 from Callander North?
Ardgarten Peninsula loop (just South of Arrochar)?
Most of the John Muir Way could be good- Train to N Berwick and ride home or on to Bo'Ness or even Stirling?
Think there is a loop you can do out of Dalwhinnie which starts along Loch Ericht.
Loch Katrine area (with or without ferry- you can take bikes on it)
Round Loch Rannoch which may as well be off road for all the traffic you'll meet...

My favourite is up the WoL, over the Pentlands and back down the Musselburgh-Penicuik and Innocent paths. You can make it as MTB or as CX or as hybrid as you wish by route-tweaking.

What about trying to link up a longer run around one or more of the 7 Stanes trail centres. The Red runs would be difficult on a cross but I'm sure blue/Green would be fine.

Not the whole thing - she's run most of it in parts. I count that as one we can do in a morning via train quickly from the house at last minute. I thought that as we have all day something further afield might be fun!

The missus wants to go for a ride on Saturday to get away from the house as there is a rugby match on.

We both have access to CX bikes and I was thinking it might be nice to go for a 20-30 mile off road(ish) ride.

Anyone any thoughts - I have a car and am able to drive anywhere within about 1-2 hours? Happy to be away all day.

Any ideas/suggestions welcome. I'm a fan of the fife coastal route, but because we've got all day I'm keen to maybe try somewhere a bit further afield.

Thanks!
