I've done it often enough on a hybrid and narrow semi-slick tyres would be faster on the road sections. The whole team is only as fast as the slowest rider. The obvious road route isn't that hilly; the only climb of any sharpness is out of Colinton to Gillespie Cross road. Might scrub a bit of the advantage though. A "race" betwixt a road rider and a mtb biker. Both start at Penicuik Town Hall and End at Balerno Parish Church</p> <p>Team A (road) must go inside the bypass.<br /> Team (mt) B must go over the hills. </p> <p>Over the hills should be shorter but starting at Penicuik means there is some road work where the road team gets away.
