@AKen - that was really striking this morning. Round Kingsknowe it was cold on my bare knees, but when I came under the bridge near Hailes Quarry it suddenly went warm (literally as if it was cold on one side of the bridge and warm on the other), and it was really quite a lot warmer to the extent that a little while later I had to unzip my top.

There's a concept in horticulture of the frost pocket where cold air rolls down a hill and collects at the bottom when trapped by physical features like a wall, fence or change in landform. I'm not sure how it applies to today's experience...

On the way home I've encountered sudden blocks of cold air on a couple of occasions (neither in hollows). Quite odd.

I've noticed this cycling along the canal towpath on very cold evenings - suddenly coming into a block of warmer air - mostly in the sheltered woody sections.

Running past the golf course on the Balgreen railway path and I could feel the cold air creeping over the path from the golf course. It never seemed to go over my lower leg and my upper body was still warm. Weird.

Had the opposite one night up the Pentlands last week, warm bands of air in pockets but mostly freezing.

Good, it wasn't just me! Was going to post about that exact same thing. I was riding through Mountcastle, thinking 'aye, it's a bit chilly', then as if a switch had been.... switched.... there was warm air. And properly warm air.

"Strangely I wouldn't say it felt that cold though."

Think that's partly due to the almost complete lack of wind - which seems to be going on for a long time recently - unusually(?)

Also, depending on when you're travelling, the sun helps.
