Sounds like you hit the main dual carriageway through Dunfermline, not a pleasant place to be in good visibility never mind fog.

You can get from the centre of town to Queen Margaret Station off road but as it's to the north of the main road unless you know it's there you probably wouldn't find it. (Just like the NEPN).

@fimm, you might think so. I mean I did. So I set off and it was all fabulous, downhill, used my shortcut through the Ratho Station station then down to the footbridge on the main Glasgow road, on other side dodged bins then made it on to the off road path which was dry and quiet so I made good time to dalmeny. But then a curious thing happened a pea Souper of a fog descended making the bridge crossing perilous as the vans and lorries that drive on the cycle path to keep the cars at thirty were appearing frequently out of the mist forcing me over to the railing which is not so high. Other side all went well through inverkeithing, however things got very foggy at the double roundabout and I ended up winding through rosyth and pitreavie and came out at the wrong end of Dunfermline necessitating cycling on very busy roads. Still got there in time just about. Indeed in good time for the cabinet secretary for education's speech. Which was just as well as there was a tumbleweed moment at the end when she said she was willing to take questions. I can always ask a question. And she thanked me at the end. For so doing. On the way home it was a lovely afternoon for a cycle and I made good time. Due to roadworks at Ratho I took a detour through Ratho park golf club which was a bit bumpy t other than that I made good time. I would use daveCs third route again. Indeed I have been driven that way before. ( I mean the bit after inverkeithing)

To add to DaveC's suggestion of the Pitreavie roundabout. The new <strike>cycle path</strike>series of give way signs which Fife council is building between Rosyth and Dunfermline crosses over the Queensferry Road twice to avoid having to cross the motorway.

If you're following the cycle path this then gives you 4 toucans (They're staggered) to travel around 100m. If you are coming up on the road from Rosyth you can join the path at the end of the first pair of toucans and then use the second to cross back and Join DaveC's route.

I have riden home from Balerno a few times and this is the way I usually take:

https://goo.gl/maps/nxqJwxb9bMN2

Past HW and down to Dalton Scrap, hang left, and out to Ratho. Over THAT hill to Newbridge and down to A8 (West bound carrageway) to foot bridge. Over the A8. Then along A8 (east bound) WEST on path to Lochend Rd and at Bridge up path to disused rail line to Kirky. The off at Kirky and on new path 9on left) to S Queensferry. Turn right at Shell garage and onto bridge via path on the EAST SIDE as the west side of the Bridge is closed weekdays. At North of FRB CONTINUE on pavement down to park n ride at Ferrytoll. Then under Railway viaduct and up into Inverkeithing. Thru InverK and out to Doubel roundabout. Right and then left and out to Route 1 turning on left by SNP cottage. Warning approaching cardiack arrest! Up this hill and into Dulloch proper. Following route 1 still get onto pavement at Hospital (Lynbank) and then at Holiday Inn, right into conf centre behind Holiday Inn.

The path from Newbridge to Kirky can be muddy but its been dry of late so just don't take your 23mm racing bike eh! The path on the north side of FRB behind the Queensferry Hotel is no longer great/viable due to the New Queensferry Crossing earthworks on the north side approaching Admiralty/Ferry Toll, so just stay on the pavement (shared use) past the layby to Ferry Toll PnR. North of InverK if you want at avoid the killer hill over the M90, don't continue up the B981 as it has blind corners at the top, instead head for either:

Pitreavie.

https://goo.gl/maps/giHzDsdLSk52

This has a large roundabout to navigate with fast traffic but you can stay on the path at the end of the motorway. I'd personally use:

Clocklunie road via Hillend:

https://goo.gl/maps/RYGGDoGgf9Q2

Clocklunie road has a cycle path up the whole length and brings you out at the Dogs Home (small white cottage at the top) where you cross the road and cont round the corner to B981 before crossing B981 onto Aberdour Road, where their is a cycle path on the right hand side path. You can go down Sandpiper Drive to Dunlin Dr or chose to cont down to pick up Route1 again at the 4th roundabout or just cycle up past Tesco HypermegaHUGEmarket along Greenshank Dr.

On the return do the opposite of your ride out, from the bottom of the hill out of InverK high st and at the Bridge on Ferryhill Rd take the pavement under the viaduct. stay on the east side of the FRB and the East side of the Bridge is two way cycle traffic.

What time you finished? Hillend Tav is nice for a pint on the way hame!

You're heading to Beano's corner of town which is a few miles east of my destination. If he is around he can hopefully help on the fife section.

Route 1 heads up through Fife to Halbeath and despite being on road is easy to follow.

Another (slightly longer) option would be to head north to Crossgates and the take the footbridge over the motorway at Halbeath junction. The B981 isn't the nicest road but is wide enough and straight enough that cars are tolerable.

"How long will it take?"

About and hour and a half (assuming you travel at about 14mph)

Given nice weather I am thiniking of just cycling this route tomorrow

I have gone over the bridge a few times but then headed west to Culross so slightly unfamiliar with the stretch from north of the forth up to Dumfy.

I have recollection of Ratho Station and road =route tio S Queens but also Kirkliston via Newbridge village and indeed once I did the cycle path.

How long will it take?
