How difficult would it be for CEC to put out a tweet with what they are spending the cycling budget on this week?

We're going to spot what they have done anyway and a short tweet would help understand the end product of work that is underway & avoid misunderstandings like above.

Yes, there may be some flack if 'we' don't agree with it but that would come anyway.

Would also help to see the many different things they are doing.

I saw what I thought was yet another sign going up at the junction at Craigleith on Wednesday. However, looking again yesterday I think they may have been removing one instead as the fancy one they're seen attending to in the photo has gone. Wonder why?

The wall at 5 Ways didn't come out of the cycling budget. Think that was from a grant to an environmental group which for the life of me I can't remember the name of.

The 'other' Five Ways near Trinity hasn't had any signs for well over a year now, so said person is doing or did a rubbish job.

Said junction does now have an utterly pointless wall though - budget, smudget.

+1 @Stiltskin For some time now I've thought the willingness to over-sign, over-chicane, and over-tactile must be met with absolute joy because it allows them to spend the cycling budget on stuff that won't frighten the horses, instead of stuff that might actually increase active travel. Especially when these items have to be redone due to contractor error.

The signage could be simpler, cheaper but more useful even for people unfamiliar with a route.

A person whose job is signage? Can I apply?

I used to think that spending the precious little cycling budget on signs was a waste of money and I agree CEC do waste a lot of the cycling money, but...

If it is the first time you've traveled a route, or a route you use infrequently, even if you are navigating by map, it is reassuring to have the signs to give you a clue that you are still going in the right direction. Also they act as "bike route publicity" and legitimise the fact you are there on that shared-use path that might not be so obviously 'shared'

CEC do waste the cycling budget, but it is on things like tactiles, chicanes, railings, resurfacing bus stops / car parking and other fluff.

@stiltskin agree with much of what you say. hate to have to inform you that they hired a person to do nothing but signs...

Is there any way of finding out how much of the cycling budget is being spent on (virtually pointless) signage. It seems to me that putting up signs is an easy way to spend the cycling budget without actually doing anything useful. There are a plethora of route signs (Craigleith junction has three separate direction signposts, while I see a ' caution' sign ( !) had appeared on the path joining the Telford underpass. It all seems such a terrible waste. 99% of the directional signs aren't really needed & in any case, if you are really having to use them they don't provide enough information anyway
