In fairness, it's not massively useful.

So I'm probably being thick here, but if I chose a space before leaving home, how is that going to stop someone who is not on the app from just driving past and pinching it before I get there?

"They can simply make a decision to go to another car park before actually getting there."

I think the idea of the app is for individual spaces/on-street parking.

The space availability for the big car parks used to be on-line, but I can't find it.

Why not? We do the same for computers in computer labs, quite simple. Never seen 10 students converge on the same computer causing chaos, mind you I don't spend much time in the labs, maybe it happens...

Bit like when you get to the multi storey car park, and it tells you how many free spaces there are in a display above the entrance. Seems sensible to stop people needlessly driving to a particular place if there is no space. They can simply make a decision to go to another car park before actually getting there.

"eventually being able to select your parking space before you leave home is the way forward"

Happens already - called workplace parking, often free to user, at a cost to employer (and everyone else).

Logical extension of Mr. G.'s thoughts - 'don't leave home unless you know there is a space waiting for you'...

"
Mr Hubert has said the use of real-time data cuts down the amount of time a person spends looking for a parking space from an average of 20 minutes to around 30 seconds.
"

Presumably that 30 seconds doesn't include time wasted faffing about with the app in the first place.

But... 20 minutes to find a space! Is that for certain parts of London? Or completely made up?

How about park a mile away and walk?

Anyway, I am convinced of the merit of the app due to this bit:

"
His plans have won backing from Neil Greig, the director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

He said: “This type of thing is the future. I think we are still a long way away from this, but eventually being able to select your parking space before you leave home is the way forward.”

Well it should be easy to create a cheap decoy that can fool all the sensors into thinking all the spaces are occupied.

You could even use such a decoy to "reserve" a space for yourself.

Think MMW counter

Great idea. Just what we need. More people driving round in circles chasing that parking space 10m closer to their destination and watching their phones rather than where they are going. Genius.

"

Mr Hubert has launched his free app in the Capital – but at the moment it only shows drivers where spaces might be available.

In the London borough of Westminster, however, he has installed thousands of sensors which allow the app to provide real-time updates on parking vacancies.
