"She managed to justify/rationalise expense by saying now she doesn't ever *want* to ride her other bikes. I'm sure that made sense at the time..."

Er. I may have used pretty much this line of argument re: my Surly tourer. But this hasn't actually stopped me coveting other bikes too!

"Shows the diversity of tastes people have for bikes: on separate threads WC is considering an ex-RM Pashley and here lusting after a custom hand-crafted bike!"

That's the thing, once you get 'into bikes' (not necessarily the same as 'into cycling') you appreciate different sorts of bikes - for a variety of reasons.

There are plenty of people happy with their 'do everything' (they want to do) bike.

@dougal I'd forgotten about that lady we were standing beside! It was a *lovely* bike.

If I had a bit more disposable income it'd be on my list :-)

I have seen a couple and have long desired one - unfortunately they are just outside my £5.13p budget. It is quite a long way clear at the top of my list of bikes I want to own.

Given Shand have adopted the Rohloff hub, I was wondering if they were considering the pinion transmission in future...

I've seen a couple around town. They are stunning looking bikes.

Interestingly, both bikes were ridden by women. Kind of puts paid to the myth that only men buy expensive bikes.

If Shand want to sponsor me to finish last in cross races....

Absolutely love the look of the bikes, just quite a lot too rich for me at the mo. Definitely on 'the list' though.

If I had the cash I would buy one. They are exceptionally good. Shand bikes I mean not tunnocks biscuits though I do haVe their cycle jersey and I am partial to a caramel log.

As a friend of the other co-owner I should not say anything, however I rode one of their bikes after puncturing in the first 500m of a CX race and it was like riding liquid speed. stiff, fast and fluid, and it coped with my 100kg+ on barely inflated tubs. Solid work. A pleasure to ride despite the fact I didn't know how to use SRAM double click shifters at all.

Our bike club had a tour of the shand cycles workshop in Livy last night. The co-owner Steven Shand has clearly thought long and hard about how to make steel bicycles using TIG welding and then paint them to an exacting standard. He was generous with his time (2.5 hours) and wisdom and gave us many tunnocks biscuits, cups of tea, water bottles and bar tape .
