“

Redheughs Village, proposed by ex-Ibrox chief Sir David Murray, was supported by councillors when plans were initially tabled back in 2015.

However, the development – which would be the first stage of the £1 billion “Garden District” built on land near Royal Bank of Scotland’s Gogarburn headquarters – was held up due to concerns over the potential environmental impact by Science and Advice for Agricultural Services (SASA).

"the steel tycoon was seeking almost £2million for the [...] three bedroom villa"

Hmmm, maybe should have listed the gym or the wine cellar as extra bedrooms.

The best detail kept until last:

"The sales material highlights the fact that the owners have been granted permission to demolish the two-storey mansion and build a country house in the Art Deco style."

“

Last year Murray Capital received a “minded to” planning permission decision for 1,300 houses at its Edinburgh Garden District site in west Edinburgh. The decision was called in by the Scottish Government with the outcome due at the start of next year.

"

Surely a proper local newspaper should be challenging this PR guff rather than uncritically parroting it? Murray bought this land for £2000 an acre. It will be worth £1 million an acre if the council caves in and allows him to build over it.

Apparently there is a map in the paper and (I think) the idea is to short cut (and have visible) between the two places it goes under the bypass.

Seems like a good idea that shouldn't need to depend on building thousands of houses!

Developers have submitted proposals for 1500 homes which they said would turn land next to Edinburgh Park and the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters at Gogarburn into a “Cambridge-style growth area” capable of powering the city’s wider economic expansion.

More speculative hot air from Murray Estates. Why he thinks he can attract £1 billion in funding while other major developments in the city (Quartermile, Springside, Granton, Western Harbour, Fountainbridge etc.) seem to be stalled for lack of funds is anyone's guess.

Actually, no-one has focussed on the important part of the Chief Planners' speech. According to The Scotsman he said "I tend to think the proposals have a wider resonance than just Edinburgh".

The Scottish Planning Policy (which sets out the Scottish Government's view on these matters) states "Where a proposal would not normally be consistent with green belt policy, it may still be considered appropriate either as a national priority or to meet an established need if no other suitable site is available".

I would argue that the Chief Planner is hinting that this proposal could get the go-ahead as "wider resonance than just Edinburgh" could possibly be interpreted as "national priority". Just my view of course - I'm sure the Chief Planner would argue he is neither against or in-favour of the development.

"Jim Lowrie, the council's current planning convenor, said: "It does look like Murray Estates is flying a kite with these proposals. Although there is some development in the west of the city this is clearly green belt land. It is against the current policies of the council. That's not obvious from their plans."

It's a pity that it wasn't mandatory for the planners/investors/developers to supply computer models of planned developments like this (and the proposed Canonmills abomination) instead of just artists' impressions from carefully-selected angles. Concerned members of the public could then generate potential hideous views from various vantage points to better demonstrate the impacts of this sort of thing at ground level. Even a requirement to produce an artist's impression of the project in mid-construction when there's nowt to see but miles of shoddy fencing, mounds of earth, Portakabins and excavators where there was once a nice field would be good.

write it please

once could probably do it using the SCURK (urban renewal kit). Although a lot of time would be needed in paintbrush doing the isometric bitmaps

Someone write it please.

I'd rather they got out of the town tbh would mean using Gorgie/Dalry through the winter was less hassle also would much rather they moved instead of knocking down Tynecastle school (it must be listed)

"Sim City, the original mac version"

Yeah we had that (and maybe an update or two). Was quite educational - factoring in various 'what ifs' - like 'build x houses here and you'll need another power station/sewage works etc. and the city taxes will be...'

I presume there's an Edinburgh developers' version which says 'let us build on the Green Belt, we'll add a football stadium (everyone will arrive by tram). You will provide all the infrastructure for free because we are building something iconic and world class which will enhance your city. As it will all be 'out of town' we expect low taxes. Also if you don't play ball, we'll take our ball to Glasgow (or anywhere else in the world that is desperate enough for inward investment that they'll pay us to come)'.
