"Many do". Indeed, when I was looking at timetables a while back to plan travel it seemed to be about 50/50 between there and South Gyle. It seems a poor investment to spend on a station where scheduling denies you potentially half of the likely users.

As inferred above, if a train does not stop, no matter the station, then nobody will get on it, not many being as keen as acsimpson to walk the difference.

Even when there were 4 trains per hour to South Gyle, they weren't clockface, so it was not a turn up and go service for people living on the route.

If I recall correctly the fife-bound trains often left just 5 minutes apart

Given that both Gateway and South Gyle are semi stations at best they certainly aren't going to encourage any major modal shift using them. The Fife circle isn't well served at the best of times so if you remove alternative services you are left with a 2 hourly service which becomes highly unattractive. It's almost as if they want the stations to fail.

The problem is especially rotten if you happen to live in the west of the city. Using the station in the morning to go to Fife I have to change trains at Inverkeithing as there is only one direct service and it arrives an hour early for normal commuters heading to Rosyth or Dunfermline. While in the evening I often have to walk the extra distance from South Gyle home. Their refusal to serve both stations also removes any option of me leaving a bike in the extensive parking area at Gateway.

Despite them offering the option for borders commuters to travel directly to the Gyle there is also no direct option to travel in the other direction. Surely some Fife commuters could be persuaded to use Shawfair to travel to the Royal Infirmary if it was a convenient service.

I'm ignoring the Aberdeen line which is reasonably well served with Gateway being a new stop rather than replacing South Gyle. It's also probably the route of chdot's comment that many trains do stop there.

As a regular travellr on this line, I have noticed that the station has got noticeably busier over the past 6 months. Still quiet-ish, but anecdotally, my visual evidence concurs with the stats that usage has increased.

To some extent this is good as there are new developments planned in the area.

I think this is the key point. The UK is appalling at building infrastructure with a far-sighted view of capacity requirements. Edinburgh Gateway bucks that trend.

But, yes:
It will need better walk/cycle infrastructure and probably a local shuttle bus service.
Spot on. CEC planners really need to raise their game on this.

“

But despite official estimates it would see 500,000 to 600,000 passengers pass through it every year, new figures show just 230,090 visited the station in the 11 months to November.

“

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/15912497.__41m_railway_station_branded_a_flop_as_it_fails_to_attract_passengers/

Makes a change from grossly underestimating passenger numbers expected at new stations..

From (limited) experience of passing through the station I’m surprised it’s approaching half the expected numbers.

Certainly seems like nothing approaching design capacity.

To some extent this is good as there are new developments planned in the area.

It will need better walk/cycle infrastructure and probably a local shuttle bus service.

AND more capacity on rush hour trains serving the station(s on that line).

Culross had a temporary station in 1992 for an open day at nearby Longannet Power Station

Great, never knew about that one!

And forgot that they had closed Bathgate II and built Bathgate III on a different alignment.
And on that theme, Drumgelloch at the other end of the Airdrie to Coatbridge line was re-opened in 1989 on site of the old Clarkston station only to be closed and moved again when the A2B line reopened.

I rode past the station today. There was one man with a camera and some staff but otherwise the place was fairly deserted. There is a lot of cameras around, most notably the drop of area which has at least 5 and almost certainly more so someone somewhere is keeping an eye on the place. I'll need to wait a few more days before I use the station though.

I continued onwards and over the bridge to West Craigs which was passable with car on the skinny tired CX with tagalong. I hope the developers at West Craigs are going to be made to surface it before selling the first house.

As an aside here's another example of how not to do signs.

It raises all sorts of existential questions around when is a cyclist not a cyclist. It does confirm to me that the planners are asking me to dismount prior to riding across the bridge though.

Airport integration seems to have been hacked onto the web journey planner rather than the tram stops being lodged as proper destinations nationally

Works on ScotRail website
Not on ScotRail app
Not on other train operator's websites (for example, East Coast)
No other tram destinations work for pre-booking (for example Balgreen)

"Is it normal to have an official openin without actually opening a station?"

Generally don't think so.

I was at the official opening of Dalgety Bay railway station (by local MP G Brown) in 1998. Pretty sure it had been open to passengers for a while.

It was ages before the Queen turned up on the Borders Line.

Is it normal to have an official openin without actually opening a station? Access was blocked by 6 foot fences still as of the middle of the day yesterday.

@Crowriver they are 'end-on' spaces which will probably be too much hassle for some.

I was more thinking of cars parking there or elsewhere nearby assuming no enforcement.

"Time will tell how they get used/abused (plenty of scope for illegal parking/loading)"

Just check out the pick up/drop off point at the east end of Waverley if you want an example. Hardly anyone uses it, drivers (especially private hire) prefer to 'load' on double yellows, block exits etc. nearby instead. As close as possible to the steps without having to actually do a u-turn or 3-pointer. "Mayhem" when the London trains are due to depart/arrive...
