Since GPS isn't very accurate, at low speeds the unit will often just be guessing if you're moving or not. It should have a setting for sampling once every second, or similar.</p> <p>I've still got an eTrex Vista which is my mountain zero-visibility backup. The interface is indeed untroubled by concepts such as 'user experience' but once you were familiar with them, they were (still are) seriously good devices. On our first one, I found the Garmin Edge Touring Plus distance reported odd. So for the next two walks, we used both my Garmin Forerunner 210 and the Edge Touring plus. We've now uploaded both of them, and the Forerunner gives the distances as roughly twice what the Edge does - e.g. Ben Vrackie Ascent - 6.77km (even though it cut out owing to low battery before we were fully back), versus the Edge claiming 3.41km...</p> <p>Walk highlands says the route we did is 9.5km / 6 miles</p> <p>Oddly, both Edge and Forerunner show roughly the same route on the map, although the Forerunner says we were out/moving for 4 hours, versus the Edge saying 51 mins (which is clearly rubbish)</p> <p>Is there a problem using the edge not on a bike? do you really need separate 'hiking' GPS units to work properly? Or is there something else going on? </p>
