It only occurs when slightly overstuffed in conjunction with having had its hooks replaced with Vaude QMRs and when mounted on the sparebike, which only has an EX1. The stitching which attaches the inner lining to the tough outer layer has come away. For a fiver though its not worth the hassle of returning the faulty bag. It's stiff enough to have my flask upright at the back (at least with an extra-strutted EX2) with no wheel-contact and the slightly higher position wasn't noticeable in terms of any effect on feel/balance. Mcnett seamgrip might hold one of them together. I guess it is all th shopping I stuff in them. The other day in preparation for my inspection I took a suit to work. I put it in a brand new Scotmid bag for life. I noticed the bottle of oil in the pocket and thought that has been there a couple of weeks since I bought it at The bike service. So no worries about top coming off. Got to work, removed carrier bag, large puddle of oil in bottom of ortlieb. Amazingly the bag for life protected the suit which I am taking as a good omen for the inspectors.</p> <p>So my more watertight ortlieb now smells of oil. Nearly tempted by the Planet X bargains but I have EBC vaude made smaller non waterproof panniers. I picked up 4 in the last sale PX did and should be well kitted out for the next few years, even at my fairly high rate of bag-attrition.</p> <p>Several months in, I can say they're fairly hard-wearing and capacious bags. I've used them with the supplied strap as a 'normal' bag for non-cycle uses and had this away with me as overnight luggage for work. They don't quite work as 'messenger bags' (but I've managed to use them with the shoulder strap when travelling with my folder). </p> <p>They seem to ward off a light shower fine, but I've been using one of Aldi's fluoro bag covers to a) keep the pannier dry and b) make me more visible. </p> <p>What's less great? The R&amp;K fittings are fixed (i.e. you can't make slight adjustments to account for your rack set up). Also there's no L-shaped hook to grip against the leg of a rack, so hitting a poorly surfaced road has led to panniers being dumped behind me. The bag I normally use now looks somewhat road-ravaged after a couple of involuntary 'drops'.
