It had been in the river for a while - the chain was solid rust, the wheel and BB bearings were seized, the saddle and seatpost were missing and the rear mech broken. But it had been a nice 24" wheel kids' Merida. So I took it home to have a think about. It was obviously well used, stolen, discarded and beyond economic repair. What to do? Whoever dragged it out the river was almost certainly not the owner. If I could, I would just have taken it to the recycling centre. But though it's stolen (prob), I doubt the owner would want it in that state. Fixing it up would be money thrown away on a stolen bike - I don't need it and can't sell it. I was actually interested (at a reasonable price) so I dropped them a line to see what's what, pointing out the RRP was £500 so they seemed to be asking a lot - they got back claiming that they'd paid £1000 for it new, and had put suspension forks on it, but I know that model comes with suspension forks and all the pictures show the original suspension forks still on it, all of which makes me suspicious. In the last hour since I've contacted them they've dropped their asking price to £600.
