@cb - "Just realised I cycled illegally down the WAR last time I was there.

Coming from Morrison Crescent and wanting to avoid the hideous zigzags I thought I would would use the shared use pavement to Drysdale Road, but then it made more sense just to stick on the road as the ped crossing had just gone red.

...but in fairness there is no signage at the crossing to say No Bikes (not sure how you easily resolve that given a bike's ability to join a road pretty much anywhere)."

I always do that as less conflict with pedestrians than weaving by planters and the zig zags are too tight for cargobikes. Time they just marked out a bus and bike lane for that bit. Or tarmac the path to new Roseburn link on North side of WAR with lights to allow bikes to turn up Drysdale.

This might be because some of the graffiti is on the outside of the bridge, over the railway tracks.

While neds are presumably quite happy to dangle over the catenary to tag the bridge, the cleaning team may be reluctant to do the same for cleaning.

No reason why they can't clean the inside of the bridge of course. But given it's glass, the graffiti on the outside would be visible.

Apparently, somehow, the street cleaning team are “unable” to access the blue bridge to clean off the graffiti <rolls eyes>

Like seriously? Bang their bloody heads together. Get them on a bike. Or a trailer. Or a trolley. Or just buckets. It can’t be beyond the wit of man to access a bridge on a £17m cycle route with some cleaning materials, can it?

Came through the canal link yesterday, it really is a helpful connection for us but oh my gosh there is a lot of graffiti already, the perspex over the bridge is almost full, it’s not the artistic type and quite sweary, sort of put a dampener on the trip.

May have been mentioned above but I see that the Duff St Lane access has been opened, I would guess unofficially seeing as it involves a short unsurfaced bit next to the bins.

It was being fairly well used as I passed by on a CityStrides inspired run.

AIUI, the original 1.5T weight limit was supposedly partly to protect the substandard road surface, but was mainly to prevent access to the road by goods vehicles for environmental reasons, those being noise, pollution and vehicle width or length. In 1974, people didn't like HGVs being on the road, and the western end of the (Temporary) WAR was tricky with sharp corners and narrow lanes. Buses weren't goods vehicles but were somehow OK though on all other counts.

And since many cars are over 1.5t these days, they aren't goods vehicles and so are allowed.

The current signage that uses diagram 626 is peculiar because it was deprecated in 1981 and diagram 622 is current.

Half the traffic on the WAR must be breaking that?

The ramps are very short though. Without knowing the overall gradient I would guess it's possible to put longer shallower slopes between each flat section. It might not line up so well with the steps but that's mostly an aesthetic thing.

A single long ramp would remove the change in angles, but the ramped steps are the way they are to accommodate people in wheelchairs. They are probably at the maximum permissible gradient. You need multiple shallow sections to allow people to recover after pushing up each step, hence the long ramped overbridges at railway stations these days.

I suppose it’s possible they try and improve the Dundee St ramps… just struggling to see what would be practical. Just evening them out?
