A few people have recommended LifesCycles to me- never been myself though.

@ianfieldhouse do the bikes they use for those classes measure power?

Only spin class I've been to was at Boroughmuir rugby club gym- it was ok, teacher was good, music was not to my taste but fun enough and not overly loud, but the bikes weren't in the best condition. It was 6 quid

I do the RPM classes at Craiglockhart a couple of times a week and they are good. They recently got new bikes and once you've gone through the set up session to figure out your max power threshold you can get a really good workout.

I've never been to Pedal House but notice that Hugh who used to take the spinning sessions at Esporta (now Virgin Active) at Fountain Park works there now. His classes were the best spinning classes I've ever been to but that may be partly down to his music choices being right up my street.

isn't it at powder hall i.e. just off st marks path/chancelot path? even has its own bridge (although the main powder hall one might be faster to use. or the golden acre path that can be accessed by tesco?

I had to visit a forumite who lives on that road a few months back and had a lovely ride there.

@SRD NEPN is nowhere near Pedal House, though, is it?

I did spin classes at Craiglockart (see link above) a while ago and as far as I can remember they were fine.

Recently I've been doing classes at Pedal House which have been really good (in a wring-the-sweat-out-of-your-tee-shirt-when-you've-finished kind of way) - but the particular classes I've been going to have been organised by my triathlon club so the coach has carte blanche to hurt us... I think the place does decent classes for the public too, I've just never been to one (and I'm not going to do any more tri club classes because I can't face cycling up Dundas Street afterwards...)

Can anyone recommend a good spin class in particular?

Nearly 3 weeks off the bike now and going stir crazy. Facial injuries clinic at Livingston have advised another 6 weeks off before cycling again. I thought a spin class might see me through, two months of nae cycling is unthinkable!

CSE (Edinburgh Uni Gym)

Fantastic facilities and cheaper than anyone else. Big weights rooms - maybe 20 dumbbell benches, about 8 barbell stations, 4 power cages, 6 barbell chest press stations, 4 ish cable machines.

Along with the usual weight lever machines and million cardio machines there is also a climbing wall, boxing gym, badminton and squash courts to book and timed swim sessions round the corner at St Leonards.

Very quiet outside of term time (1/4 of the year)

No car parking... but big inclusive secure bike parks, both covered and uncovered, you just need to ask them to add it to your swipe card.

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone could help me in recommending a decent gym in Edinburgh. I will be moving to your city in January for work and (hopefully!) will be living in the Haymarket/Dalry area of town. I was looking around this area last week whilst I was up there and discovered 'Energy Gym' which is based in on Collinton Road – it seems pretty decent and was good value for money. The chap who owned it was friendly too. I was just a bit concerned if may get a wee bit crowded in there at peak times. I had a look at the gym in Meadowbank Sports Centre too – it was ok, but I was put off by the membership prices which I thought was a bit steep.

Ideally, I'd like a good old fashioned no-nonsense bloodn'sweat “Rocky” type gym, full of old rusting weights and punch bags, but so far haven’t come across one in Edinburgh!

Thanks for reading,

Bob
