They should change the meanings so that amber means still green, then red is first red or as we understand it Amber, second red still Amber and finally really really red sorry means stop, it is just that there are cars coming the other way. You do see some wild cyclists going through on red but we are mostly anticipators of a change. E.g I cross Lothian road from red ASL box when the forever green man stops and just before the green comes on once I have established the cars on Lothian road have stopped to allow the peds to cross. This lets me cross without the cars trying to take me out and sometimes I get as far as the car parked outside the kebab shop pushes me back into the traffic.
