Oddly, sadly, the first of his articles I ever read in full was in last week's Sunday Herald.

Very sad. I thought he was a good journalist. Rare.

Many will have heard about the sudden death of writer and journalist Ian Bell.

The Sunday Herald today has dedicated the issue to him.

There are links to 12 of his 'best' pieces including his tribute to William McIlvanney. (With Ian everything he wrote was considered. He selected words to consciously avoid cliches and the expected flow. A short sentence was good and he never used brackets! ))

If you like considered words written with passion and craft then these are fine examples to start with. He also wrote books on Bob Dylan and RLS.
