Still plenty of decent cask ale pubs in Edinburgh: I doubt there's been a serious shortage since the late 1980s, though I suppose as so many pubs are closing these days maybe not the number there used to be.

Whether they all serve nice pies is another matter.

"Fake old man's pub" is an interesting one. Many of the real old man's pubs are closed down now, but there are still a few 'authentic' ones in the vicinity of Leith.

As for Berts bar, I seem to recall it was a favoured haunt of employees of the former Scottish Arts Council back in the day, various lawyers and finance types in the vicinity too. A good bar though as I remember.

That it is now a hipster "craft beer" establishment perhaps just shows the business owners are chasing a particular 'demographic'. Whether that will succeed is another matter: pubs keep closing after all, because more and more folk drink at home these days.

I don't have a dog myself (we're a cat household) but do occasional dog sitting. I just think that pubs with well-behaved dogs have a friendly atmosphere, and people tend to talk to strangers more when dogs are around.

Will give the Earl of Marchmont a go!

Stickman, you should try to Earl of Marchmont if in the area with your dog.

They have doggie food and (really) doggie beer available!

Bow Bar, Stockbridge Tap, and Cloisters are the same company.

The beer is excellent in all of them.
Tap does good food too.
Bow Bar frequently shortlisted/wins various whisky awards, but nae food.
Cloisters is my favourite.

Edinburgh Beer Factory at Sighthill. I was in last week buying gift packs for my team - nice people, they will have a cafe/bar and tours by next summer.

Paolozzi is the name of the lager. I have 3 bottles in the fridge.

IWRATS, the EBF have secured rights from the family to use artwork on everything from beer carriers, bottle openers to beermats...............so there will be no escape !

Lager tops though, sheesh

Bert's in Stockbridge now the Stockbridge Tap. Still good. Same punters. Pies gone though. Excellent beer spread and barman did not bat an eyelash when I ordered a lager tops earlier this month. Thought I'd have to explain it to him.

Paolozzi Brewery, aye? Right.

The sister pub in the 3 pub berts chain was in Stockbridge. Not sure it is there no more. Nor the one in St. Andrews.

I used to go in them all. I favoured their leek pie. Williams bros beer on keg is still a draw for me. Or in a bottle. Dry gate gets good write up from fietsclub Balerno who went there prior to the velodrome at parkhead.

I spotted a four pack of Paolozzi beer being given as a gift to a woman who retired this week. The woman giving the gift is pals with the woman who owns Paolozzi brewery next to screw fix in sighthill. The brown beer is next apparently.

The bow bar in Victoria street sparked off the Imitation old man's pub and it is still going strong. Thomsn's on Morrison street similar and part of same chain IW Stewart.

Of interest to those on here who love their beer.........

Out last night with a bunch of chums. Designated meeting place, Berts Bar in William Street - famous as you all probably know for decent cask beer, convivial atmosphere, bike parking on the railings and pies, big pies, small pies, mini pies !!

Well, sad to say its been "done up" so you can forget all that.

It is now some poncified, "craft beer" gastro pub with menus on clipboards, bearded youth aplenty and waitress service.

The beer choice is rubbish, Williams range on keg is a bit old hat now and only a few cask offerings, none of which were inspiring.

Suffice to say, we drank one pint of the (not very good) Drygate beer, and decanted to Teuchters right across the road.

A proper pub with lots of well kept beers, busy and a great atmosphere - I should also say that the beer is considerably cheaper than the £4 a pint in Berts.

I looked across the road later in the evening from our (heaving) bar and there was plenty space and tables in Berts.

Such a shame
