"Hit the accelerator and honk the horn seems to be gaining increasing popularity to "deal with" pedestrians crossing the road"

Indeed. Part of the "get out my way" Mr. Toad mentality that appears to be taking over.People like that really shouldn't be behind the wheel of a lethal machine.

@kaputnik: I wonder if most learners (or the recently-passed) believe the Hazard Perception part of the test was just there to annoy them?

Kaputnik

Totally agree with everything you say peoples lives are much more important than saving a few minutes.

The guy who was killed on the Drumbrae was one of my friends. I don't know any of the circumstances but it just seems so tragic.

People do walk out into the road without proper consideration. They always have done and they most likely always will. Our sense are limited and our brains don't always make the right decision (this goes for both pedestrians and drivers)

Perhaps the risky pedestrian has got more prevalent now given the distractions of smartphones and earpods, but the two most recent incidents (one tragically fatal) appear to have been elderly persons that I assume were not immersed in Whatsapp or wearing the latest Beats by Dr Dre.

And yes I constantly mutter and curse under my breath when people run out or do daft things when crossing the road; but it's no excuse not to always slow down, give way and just let them safely on their way. I don't think it's possible to safely drive or cycle in town without constantly expecting that the next person you do (or don't see) isn't going to do something daft. Hit the accelerator and honk the horn seems to be gaining increasing popularity to "deal with" pedestrians crossing the road; worryingly so among bus drivers.

So it's really frustrating when people (Twitter mainly) say we shouldn't be reducing (or better enforcing) speed limits (statistically proven to greatly reduce both the likelihood and impact of any accidents) or investing in safer and more convenient street design (thereby reducing the necessity to make risky decisions just to cross a road) but that we just need to legislate for "stupid pedestrians". I'm bored of telling people that there are no pedestrian crossings on Marionville Road so what's the use in their stupid advice to cross at the green man.

There is a general craziness these days amongst all road users and pedestrians.

Firstly this may be a bit controversial (and I do not intend it to be victim blaming) but how many people to you see crossing a road when it is dangerous to do so. Often for some bizarre reason they stop paying attention or hurrying when they are partly over regardless of the clear danger. It's almost like some people have forgot how dangerous traffic is.

The flip side and far worse though is that too many drivers since passing their test have now got a total disregard for the highway code. Also they have forgot they are basically in killing machines that hurt and kill if they hit people.
