I cycled seven miles twice today, and in the middle of it walked two miles, albeit with a half-hour break in the middle of that. A one mile walk takes me about 15 minutes at a moderate pace, and is quite pleasant.

too much car use infantilises people, so that they have difficulty in conceiving of walking more than, say, half a mile. What does everyone else think?

Couldn't agree more. I work at South Gyle and the only place to really "go" on your lunch hour is the Gyle Centre. It's about 10 minutes walk each way. What amused and bemused (bamuses?) me more than the number of colleagues who will drive over is their horrified reaction when I suggest that they could walk.

"But it's so far!"
"But it's cold out there!"
"But it takes so long!"

I long ago gave up pointing out that if you drive over, the time it takes to get to your car, get out of the car park, get into the Gyle through a number of roundabouts and sets of lights, get a space, walk to the centre and then repeat that in reverse is probably longer than it would take to walk it...

2 miles is a looooong way if you're used to driving everywhere! And it *is* a tragedy about the Rainbow Landings closure; I'm a member and I'd rather have paid more money to keep it open. And it's going to be tough for the 1 in 4 workers who're being made redundant. But seriously, I feel that too much car use infantilises people, so that they have difficulty in conceiving of walking more than, say, half a mile. What does everyone else think?

Don't know which part of Slateford Road they live in, buts it's less than 2 miles away.

AND a nice walk(/cycle)

""I imagine a lot of people will do the same and that's going to have an impact on other people in the area.""

But I don't care and will do it anyway..

"We'll be inclined to park elsewhere and walk into the zoo, because there are a lot of streets in the area that don't have restrictions on parking."

They're going to have to WALK. A complete and utter NIGHTMARE scenario.

Elspeth MacMillan, 30, from Slateford Road, said she was extremely disappointed by the decision: "They should have told us when we joined up - we only joined less than a month ago and one of the perks of it was that you get free parking, and obviously we've been charged the same as older members.

"And it's also the fact that it comes after the Rainbow Landings closure. Having paid £120 for us and our three-year-old daughter, we're very disappointed.

"We'll be inclined to park elsewhere and walk into the zoo, because there are a lot of streets in the area that don't have restrictions on parking.

-----

Seriously, you become a member of th zoo with free parking being one of your reasons for doing so? And after spending £120 on something that many would see as a luxury you can't bring yourself to spend an additional £10 to park without restriction for the next 12 months, choosing instead to gum up the residential streets around there?

Plus, I doubt they knew a month ago they'd need to bring in this measure...

"as of January 1, they will have to pay £2 to park, or buy an unlimited parking sticker for £10"

That's cheap!
