Been meaning to report that urchaidh and I swapped racks a week or so ago. We're delighted with the results - hope he is too.

I got cycle service to re-assemble the rack (it's a bit tricky on a Helios and I had to get to work) and to add a rack light.

It's wonderful having a light on the bike that doesn't get forgotten and that we don't need to worry might break and fall off. With the Moon light in front, it's the best lit the Helios has ever been - good timing considering the vile weather.

If you happen to know where you could get your hands on one then a spare R/K Vario pannier hook would probably work.

If you get stuck, SRD, I'll make you a bracket to mount a rack light. For my Blackburn EX-1 I made a vertical plate that is clamped where the rear stay is welded to the rack base.

SRD: I've got a spare rear rack you're welcome to if you can't find something suitable. Little worn, but so long as you're not carrying a child on it it would be fine.

Glasgow -> Edinburgh logistics may be more trouble than the rack's worth, however.

"We have a old Rhode seat - I'd assumed it would be too much effort to find a compatible rack"

I've had two - which needed different Blackburn racks.

The difference was the vertical space at the front of the rack where the seat slides in (difficult enough when the rack is the right one! Difficult to get out too, but generally a good seat.)

The Blackburn I donated should be clearly identifiable from the B&M front light mount (pretending to be a mudguard seat stay mount) bolted to the seat stay stays via a pair of huge washers.

We have a old Rhode seat - I'd assumed it would be too much effort to find a compatible rack - so could maybe make use of this rack. Would just need to check that the rack would fit both the seat (should me fine) and frame (not so sure), which requires a bit of a faff.

The bike currently has a basic EBC rack on it. If it works out your welcome to that, or alternatively I could just give you something towards to cost of a new rack - I'd probably keep the EBC rack and put it back on when done with the seat.

Adjusts to fit 'any' rack with two transverse bars (presume won't fit racks with a plate on top).

Can't see how it attaches to the Blackburn? Or is it just slightly off-centre?

Thanks for the suggestion. Will certainly try if we can't find anyone looking for a Blackburn.

@SRD how about one of these?
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/busch-and-muller-rear-carrier-light-bracket-for-d-toplight-light-prod560/

Bolts onto your existing rack, provides a rear light mount plate. I have one on my Blackburn rack and it's held my Toplight in place very well for three years.

Possibly less trouble than fitting a new rack.

We've got a Blackburn rack that we got when we had a copilot seat on the tandem. But we no longer have a seat.

Does anyone want to swap a 'normal' rack, with a plate that a rack light could be attached to, for a Blackburn?

(I actually had one, but donated it to someone on here, who needed a rack; think our current Blackburn was also a kind donation from wing pig? I've slightly lost track, as we've gone through a few)
