Duddingston-Jock's Lodge via Willowbrae or round the hill?
(Is that urgh for the parked cars, the road surface (especially that rattly bit under the railway bridge on the approach to the roundabout down from the pub), the behaviour of cars at the various roundabouts or the building style?)

I couldn't tell which way the wind was blowing this morning. I've been experimenting with Peffermill-Duddingston-Jock's Lodge-Restalrig (urgh) which seems to involve being blown upon from all angles.

Even me on my straight bars was dropping and tucking as much as I could. And big props to the roadie who was taking turns in front of me from Roseburn to Maybury (I'm not sure intentionally!). Not sure I was much help to him, but it was nice drafting behind someone a bit.

Chambers gives: "addiction: a habit that has become impossible to break".

That was a "braw drouth" this morning indeed - coming over the slight rise between Haymarket and Roseburn at Magdala Crescent was like being smacked in the face by a big, windy palm. Hurrah for drops!

There probably won't be a tailwind, but it will be, on average, slightly downhill. Endorphins plus general fresh-air-ness, I expect.

Has anyone ever seen/made a 3D model of the airflow round/over the hill? I'm always vaguely intrigued by how the wind changes direction as you progress to keep facing you.

Aye!

And it's days like this I'm happy to have taken the geared bike instead of the fixed wheel - wind it up in a big gear then glorious wind-assisted freewheel.

Ah, looking forward to the ride home already...

So this morning I'm feeling like death warmed up (at least death had the good grace to give me a hot water bottle) and I can see that the ride will involve 5 miles of constant headwind.

But instead of taking the offer of a halfway lift with a flat walk the rest of the way, or hopping on a bus virtually door-to door, I still sling my broken wind-pessimistic self onto the saddle and plug away. Why?

Because I still enjoy it, that's why. Try saying that about driving in a 5mph queue (I was going about 6mph so still going past it).

Although worringly it does mean that I fulfil a lot of the criteria for 'addiction'...
