It took me by surprise last night and I had to double back. It's a shame there's no warning at the toucan, or I missed it.

@biketrain - yes from Inverkeithing head down the main street and join the cycle path at the traffic lights/zebra crossing opposite Ferrytoll. The path is quite an adventure, but you will get there by following the signs.

West side can be a great viewpoint on a clear evening.

Yes. A few of us on here do it daily. You'll need to use the west footpath though as the east side is closed at the moment. The signage is not too bad so you should be able to follow it from inverkeithing though. If in doubt...use their less-than-adequate-in-places cyclepath as that will be signposted the best.

for what its worth, i had some chat with feta about the proliferation of "cyclist must dismount" signs on the bridge cycleway.

at one time there were more than a dozen, it was getting ridiculous.

i pointed out that it wasn't really feasible to comply, and that it seemed to be nothing more than a routine arse covering act on their part.

in reply, they acknowledged that the signs carried no legal weight and that i was free to ignore them.

they continue to put them up though, every time they erect any small barrier fence.

Work to refurbish the footpaths on the Forth Road Bridge will commence on Monday 3 October and continue through to Thursday 6 October.

During this period the East footpath will be closed to the public from approximately 09:30 until 16:30 each day, when the West footpath will be open instead.

Cyclists wishing to avoid the steps to the West footpath may call Bridge Control on 0131 319 3083 to arrange a lift.

The work involves the removal and reinstatement of white lines and other road markings, and the installation of improved signage.

We are grateful to cyclists and pedestrians for their patience and understanding during these works.

I didn't mind it as much as I first thought, but it was a pain in the backside in bad weather (which we got a lot of in the last few weeks- there really is nowhere to hide with a strong westerly) and when I wanted to get home quickly- never really brave enough to mix it with the traffic on the M90 slip road...

I suppose you should go down the steps, under the bridge and up the other side. But again there are no signs. You only realize when you have gone a considerable way DOWN the hill and find a small no entry sign.

The risk of hoiking my bike up and down steps is one reason I rarely go to the FRB. How is a near total absence of helpful signage, plus steps, in any way not treating certain people less favourably than others, according to the EA2010?

There was quite an amusing exchange between the FRB and Traffic Scotland Twitter accounts on that news. The person operating the TS account got a bit confused with their East and Wests which FRB kindly corrected. TS then admitted they were getting a ribbing in their office for being 'blonde'.

In fairness...you had to be there.

Have been WFH last 3 days so haven't had a chance to look myself. May try a recce at the weekend- one cycling only (as opposed to cycle lugging) option may be through the hotel grounds at N Queensferry, but that seems a big and unpleasant diversion.

There was a pavement adjacent to the Ferrytoll slip road, which i used, then just sidle past the layby, salmon-like.

Cheers @bax. There was no way I was going back up to the bridge in that wind last night, so I just squeezed past the no entry sign and then eventually had to go onto the slip road. It didn't seem very "official", though.

I have no problem (or not much, anyway) with using the west path, but the information and signage are awful. Going over the bridge from the south last night (Thursday 28), the first issue is that on the east side there are huge signs saying the path is shut but nothing to say you can use the west path. I guess you just have to know. Then, at the north end, it seems you shouldn't continue down the bike path as you end up in a building site. I suppose you should go down the steps, under the bridge and up the other side. But again there are no signs. You only realize when you have gone a considerable way DOWN the hill and find a small no entry sign.
