It's funny to be agreeing with Nick Cook but anything to increase the powers, and more importantly budgetary freedom, of local councils would be a good thing in my view. We have some of the weakest, most oversized and least representative councils in Europe yet they are expected to manage all sorts of important things which impact almost everyone every day - schools, roads, bins, homelessness, air pollution, planning - and in Edinburgh's case, a nationally notable and unique infrastructure project. The idea that a council might have to go begging to the government to build a few metres of cycle lane, to restrict parking on pavements or to levy a tourist tax to fund services would be unthinkable or even unconstitutional in many other places, yet it's a sad reality for the Scottish local authority.

Having said that, I'd be a bit sad if the only achievement I could come up with following a full term as a councillor was (unsuccessfully) opposing road safety measures.

“Thoughts on having a mayor for Edinburgh?“

Haven’t read the Nick piece, but presume he knows Edinburgh has a Lord Provost. Obviously (English style) modern mayors have different powers and can (always?) cover more than one LA.

So ‘mayor’ for Lothian?

As ever there would be issues of ‘democracy’/accountability - oh, and resources...

Models from other countries might mean Provosts for Queensferry and Porty!

Things would be better generally if SG funded LAs properly. ‘Mayors’ is a distraction.

Interesting. I'm guessing this means he's out of favour with Mr Ross's bosses in London and can't make the MSP List.

The Tory councillor I know as a friend is on the Rory Stewart wing of the party. I expect they'll step aside and let an ultra-nationalist take their place.

While he will continue to be an independent councillor he has announced his intentions of aligning himself with the Green group on the council. He has also meantime joined the Green Party.

Cllr Howie said: “I’m looking forward to working more closely with my new Scottish Green colleagues on areas of common interest such as inclusion, high quality public services and use of public space. I recognise that being originally elected from another political party means that my relationship with those new colleagues will be different. But nevertheless I can see a lot of overlap in our areas of interest.

Yes, IIRC he is the longest serving member of the current council. Prior to the last election he was on the transport committee.

That was what got my goat. 30 years a councillor (according to his page on the LD website), part of several past administrations and a ex-Finance Convenor. If active travel is in a state in Edinburgh (and it is), he need look no further than his own mirror to find someone to blame.

Robert needs to get off his chair and go for a walk around his constituency. The paths around East Craigs are cracked and broken with roots making them impassable to all but the most determined push chair users. There are no dropped kerbs other than where driveways happen to line up with paths and yet he thinks it appropriate to write: "Across the country numerous Liberal politicians have campaigned to get broken pavements fixed, uneven pavements sorted and kerbs lowered"

Am I to assume he isn't one of that number.

He presumably also hasn't left his constituency via the pedestrian crossings of Barnton Junction either. Haymarket junction has nothing on the 6 phases required to safely cross from East Craigs to the Barnton shops.

He presumably also isn't aware that "dog walkers, with dogs which veer unpredictably to the next interesting scent" are failing in their responsibility to keep their dogs under control. Would he be advocating that his precious motor vehicles should slow down to walking pace whenever a dog is nearby?

He returns to sense at the end though "It’s great that so many people are getting out of their cars and walking or cycling. Let’s remember we are all on the same side and make a little space for each other." Although how that mixes with militancy I'm not sure.
