I let buses out quite often, since I am already in the middle of the lane it's not really much of an extra risk (although as noted above, I wouldn't do it somewhere unexpected, like when I'm already motoring at over 20mph in a traffic stream).

Since I expect / demand the bus drivers to wait behind me when it's not safe to pass, it seems only fair to let them out when it's safe for me to do so. Letting buses out can make 80+ people's rush hour that bit nicer, after all.

I'll very rarely let vehicles pull out in the same way i do in the car. I don't think its safe to be blocking traffic for what ever reason on the bike in the car its a lot less painful if your rear ended by an inattentive driver.

It would be extremely interesting to see LRT's version of this sort of thing (whereas I assume other operators' driver-guidance regarding cyclists is just "if you can't crush them, gas them"). What is their opinion of cyclists filtering up between stationary buses heading east along Princes Street in the evening, when the three-foot exclusion zone of one bus would end inside the adjacent bus?
It's perhaps a time-of-day thing but I notice more drivers ignoring the 'please let me pull out' stickers on buses which are indicating that they want to pull away when I'm on a bike compared to when I'm driving, unless it's just that a car is better able to block the cars behind it to let the bus out.

I got a (little) confused about this article until I realised it was Seattle and they drive on the other side of the road compared to Edinburgh.

When he says to ride up the left side of the bus, we should take that to mean the right side of the bus...
