Yes, riding like a [insert epithet here] is never cool. No matter how much you want the cyclepaths to be as wide as they are in the Netherlands, fact is they aren't.

I think it *is* an unwritten rule not to take up so much of the width of the road/path that you cause a danger to oncoming traffic. That kind of thing shouldn't need said!

I'd prefer not prohibit cycling two abreast, however it seems only polite to single up to pass others and let others pass, just as I'd do when walking with a friend.

Of course, it's always better if the path is wide enough to permit friends to walk/cycle beside each other and still leave room for passing! That's not the case on the canal, but hopefully on newer infrastructure...

Hence, I fully agree that the oncoming riders should have singled up rather than force you off the path.

Should it be an unwritten rule that this isn't that cool?

I've almost come off a few times recently on the Leith to Roseburn path because I had to squeeze right over to avoid two riders riding two abreast, and the side of the path was either icy or really muddy or both. Fine if the conditions are OK / not too dark or it's quiet but I'd rather not come off for a third time this year!
