"

Current population trends indicate the Capital could become the country’s biggest city in the next quarter of a century – bigger than the City of Glasgow council area – placing additional pressure on housing and transport services.

For Mr Kerr, ambition and vision will be as important as money in the drive to ensure Edinburgh can cope with future demand.

“Edinburgh has to start thinking of itself as a global city and how it can be competitive in Europe,” he says. “In a short space of time – 20, 25 years – we will be the biggest city in Scotland. We need to start preparing for Edinburgh being that size of city – not half a million, but three-quarters of a million. That’s preparation in terms of infrastructure, housing, all those things that make a successful city.

“Given that Edinburgh is the only growing part of the Scottish economy, it is the sensible thing for both the Scottish and UK governments to invest in Edinburgh – that’s the case we’re making for why the deal should be as large as £2bn.”

He adds: “We’re still opening up the city in terms of transport infrastructure, both west and east. And the City Deal is still about innovation through the universities and the very big strengths we have there.”

"

Describing the Under-Secretary of State for Scotland as a "TOP government minister" is stretching it a little bit.

"

A TOP government minister has vowed that Edinburgh’s long-awaited multi-billion pound City Deal will not be threatened by Brexit.

"

I've done some research in to this city deal and I can't find any vague detail on what the money will be used for. All the marketing just seems to be a collection of buzz phrases. If I was bidding for that amount of money I'd have some idea what I wanted to spend it on.

I can't see any money being spent on cycling (or walking) unless it's part of one of the bigger projects.

I think the Leith tram extension will be first on the list, funding for Edinburgh festival, longer train platforms across the region, expanded park and ride, M8 Airport junction, Sherrifhall grade separation, Barnton Bypass, a few business "incubator" units, possibly a new college, pedestrianisation of George Street, Winchburugh M9 junction.

And I'd also bet at least 10% will go on consultancy fees.

Building a segregated cycle route is just like building a new metro or tram line - except for being hugely cheaper and less disruptive.

But I suppose they'll blow the money on something expensive instead.

"

It is expected the six councils covering the area will be handed new cash for investment in infrastructure, which could include new roads, tram extensions and a boost for the Borders Railway.

"

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-business-bosses-welcome-planned-1bn-city-deal-1-4075581

(Or all the segregated cycle paths you ever imagined. But probably not filling in all the potholes - that's revenue...)
