I was contemplating this earlier. For the next few weeks at least, I get the benefit of only having to run my lights in the evenings since its well into morning by the time i leave 0815-0830.

Before the clocks changed it was a bit murky at both ends of my commute so i usually ran the lights both ways.

One year, many eons ago, when I were a callow youf, still at school, they did not put the clocks back. It were awful and I were that traumatised I still remember it like it were yesterday. It were dark int mornings and dark int evenings comin'home. There were also more accidents that year with people being hit and run over. They have never repeated this, with good reason, I fink!!

Still plenty of bikes out with no lights this evening - it's bad enough in the dark with a face full of car headlights but in the wind and driving rain it's just insanity.

Another eejit on a beautiful fixie with bullhorn bars and leather tape at Forest Road with no lights this evening. At least he went round the one-way system in the right direction.

Came within inches of mowing down a rather substantial lady (I probably would have come off worst if there had been a prang) who stepped right out of Somerfield at West Maitland Street onto the road and directly into my path without looking. I swerved around as I yelled a warning. She'll have some interesting underwear laundry to do tonight!

At least the rain on the road will mean everyone's lights will be multiplicated on their ways home.
Unexpectedly, there seemed to be more bikes and stuff-hanging-in-the-changing-room at work today than last Monday. I hope they've all remembered that it'll be dark when they leave and have brought their lights, particularly as I forgot to remove all of mine and don't want any of them nicked.

By gum it's dark out here at the showground. It's a bit grey to begin with, but guessing an hour and fifteen from now it's going to be properly black.

I'd rather it simply didn't change twice a year

You can't just change it once a year or else we would end up back at yesterday (eventually) if we were putting them back or in tomorrow if going forward.

I like the custom. We have seasons and equinoxes and longest days and shortest days. It is quite pointless, apart from the poor people up north who see no daylight in the winter. I think I might have mentioned before that the legendary Ayr Pavilion put the clocks forward one spring and flung everyone out of the Powerhouse Disco an hour early. When we complained theytold us to come back in six months when we could have an extra hours drinking.

THere has been research that shows more accidents happen at night is that right? But if the clocks didn't go back it would be darker in the mornings so maybe there'd be more accidents then?

I don't like it when it gets dark at 3.30 but after 21.12. things start to get better (well not last winter). So far I have only had windy but dry and wet but mild when adding in the darkness factor. Wet, windy, cold and dark, that is the worst.

@splitshift I have been a farmer in the far north, and we ignore the daylight savings for a couple of weeks, as its just not practical.

Who needs daylight anyway? There's more than enough light from the handle-bar mounted floodlamps illuminating MMW these days to go round :)

should the clocks go back ?
Yes, to about 1964 so i can live a better life !
We need more light for the farmers finding black cows in a black feild ! Wish someone would invent electric lighting ! Seriously most farming types I know dont care, they can manipulate animals so much now they can have various seasons in a day !

I'd rather it simply didn't change twice a year
"

"
And since the survey responses clearly refer to the clocks going forward in spring, I guess most people agree.
"

I'm just confused.

Thought the 'idea' was to go to Europe time - which I thought also changed times twice a year(?)

Think I'd go for not changing twice a year and permanently on "BST".

I don't care if it's GMT or BST all year round, I'd rather it simply didn't change twice a year. Though there would be a cost to update all the systems that auto update the timezone/daylight savings info.

""Our research found that the greatest annoyances about the clocks going back for people in Scotland are leaving the house while it's still dark (43%)"

WTF? Did those 43% even know what question they were answering?

"having to have the central heating on (47%)"

And they don't need the central heating on otherwise?

"And one-third of respondents said it would be harder to get their children to school on Monday. "

Why? They have an extra hour in bed.

What a pile of keech.

"The truth about daylight saving is that does us no good, and that an end to it would leave the people of Scotland safer, happier, and better off in terms of energy bills."
