"Cyclists make up 8% of all who died on the road in the EU. The number of cyclist fatalities decreased by only 4% between 2010 and 2014, which is much lower than the total fatality decrease (18%). There were significant differences between Member States. The share of cyclist deaths is especially high in the Netherlands (25%), as well as in Denmark and Hungary (16%). The differences of course mirror the popularity of cycling in different Member States but also e.g. the safety of bike paths, the safety awareness of cyclists themselves (e.g. helmet use) and the awareness among drivers of the safety of surrounding cyclists." (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-16-864_en.htm)

"The average EU fatality rate for 2015 was 51.5 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, similar to the past two years. This slowdown, which follows a significant reduction of 8% in 2012 and 2013, has several contributing factors, such as a higher interaction between unprotected and motorised road users in our cities. Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.) also account for a large proportion of the 135 000 people the Commission estimates[1] were injured." (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-863_en.htm)

@IWRATS I don't know details - guess we have to wait for the press release announced for 12.00 CET (in half an hour). I only read vague mentions yesterday.

When you say numbers up, is this per trip, per kilometer? I'd always be keen to see an announcement of the reduced mortality from active travel, but that's a lot harder to measure. If I hadn't cycled all my life I might be dead now, might not.

I once worked with a lady called Violet Black who, to my great chagrin, wasn't actually a goth.

Violeta Bulc will announce the 2015 figures today at noon.

I think I saw in some media report that numbers have gone up, and the slogan "Let's do better" doesn't quite inspire confidence.
