Watched this last night too. I thought the Daily Record reporter summed it up nicely. All these teams with oodles of cash, research and time pushing the envelope of what is possible, and then Mr Obree beats the world prone record in a contraption built out of recycled bike parts, a saucepan and a pair of second hand roller skates, at a cost of £6. Total genius. It was a wonderful affirmation of the pioneering spirit and what one person can achieve.

@jdanielp, yes that bit behind the sideboard is the bit I can recreate. I can maybe cycle oin those sunny Ayrshire hills but not as fast. He is quite limber don't ye think. Long limbed, loose limbed and limber.

Obsessive, good visual learner, says what he thinks without filter.

I was once in a time trial in which Graeme obree was taking part. All I remember is a brief rumble of a disc wheel followed by a few seconds of somebody going past me at a speed that seemed impossible, then he was out of sight and that was the last I saw of him. Incredible.

Watched this on ayePlayer last night. It was quite extraordinary.

I came away with the impression that Obree isn't a sportsman at all, he's an artist in the vein of Kafka's Hungerkünstler. The Beastie is a sculpture, not a bicycle. If I'm not much mistaken its resemblance to a coffin isn't accidental. The scene of him turbo-training could have been a Howson painting.

A beautifully made film about a man you couldn't possibly not like or admire, but he must be quite impossible to work with.

"I really enjoyed it" +1

When there's a bit in something that puts a tear in my eye or a lump in my throat, or a bit that makes me laugh out loud, I credit the film maker with having done a fine job. This ticked both those boxes.

I don't think I'll ever tire of watching, listening to or hearing about Graeme Obree.

I really enjoyed it - his uncompromising attitude and humour. His training manual is just the same - you're breathing wrong, your turbo trainer needs to be taken to bits, don't buy bargain bin veg etc.

"

Hi

How are you? I hope you've been enjoying your summer and have also been able to get on the bike for a few miles too. As you know, I recently completed a documentary called, "BATTLE MOUNTAIN". It was a great experience and was great to see many people get involved.

I've been on a screening tour across the UK these last few months, trying to get the word out about the film. The response from the cycling community has been tremendous! Everyone has been asking me about the DVD and when it's going to come out.

Well...we're now on iTunes, with Android and Google coming VERY SOON. If you didn't get a chance to come to one of the screenings, you can still check out the film via iTunes. Just click the link in my bio to have a look.

Thanks again for all of your support and let me know what you think about the film using hashtag #ObreeFilm

All the best,

Would have loved to hang around afterwards but I was dragged away by my partner who claimed she enjoyed it but was out of the cinema like a hot snot. Any further cycling-related conversation was forbidden for the night.

Saw one of my friends actually got a go of getting into the beastie. Quite jealous!

A surprisingly long film, actually, and lots of humour in it. As Claggy pointed out, the film had a lovely old school Kodak colour tint to it.

Had a nice chat with Graeme afterwards and we talked about when he came to POP, and his appreciation for 'run what ya brung' racing.

Beastie might be six feet long but is otherwise absolutely tiny.

Pretty well attended. Graeme brought his diminutive "Beastie" along for everyone to see and was last seen with T shirts and books in foyer of Cameo. Saw Colin, Ged, Claggy, Arellcat and others.

Film was entertaining. Graeme did take the prone record at over 56mph. Team Delft (with lots more backing) took the record that year at 83mph. (Now broken).
Graeme did the whole mechanics of the thing on his own though - something which is remarkable in a world of corporate sponsorship*. Even more remarkable was that he was far from well with less than three weeks to compete.

*Skyscanner did help with transport.

I was an investor in the Kickstarter campaign which funded this film. I don't remember seeing any comms from the campaign about these screenings - did anyone else get an email which publicised these?

(The comms have been a bit patchy over the year or so since the campaign met its target, so not sure if anything was sent or whether the mail ended up in Spam by mistake and got deleted).

We are very lucky to host a Q&A with the man himself, Graeme Obree, after the screening and would love to see as many of you there as possible.

This documentary follows the veteran inventor‐turned‐cycling‐champion as he seeks to break new records in his late 40s, using a very unusual bike designed by himself and christened ‘The Beastie’ by his friend Sir Chris Hoy.”

There will be a Q&A following the screening with Graeme Obree and hosted by John Beattie.
