There is a signposted, and sung about road from Rannoch Moor Station to Corrour (on via Loch Treig , Tummel, and Lochaber) and also a road from the Station to the estate house and Youth Hostel, both a lot easier to cycle than going to Newtonmore for the train, the head of Loch Laggan effectively being the Spean/Spey watershed

When I saw those bike racks I was trying to work out a scenatio where someone would want/need to use them. Cycle from Pencaitland, lock your bikes and go for a walk around ther Carberry Estate?
As puzzling to me as the bike racks at Corrour station.

I took a wrong turn this afternoon and ended up at the Crossgatehall end of the Pencaitland path.

Noticed that there're eight new bike racks, and that the horse stile thing has been removed, so no need to squeeze through the K-frame thing anymore.

"Please be aware that upgrading path works to ‘Ultitrec’ path surface is about to commence imminently on the Pencaitland Railway Path (National Cycle Route 196), from the junction with the Elphinstone Cemetery Path westwards to Crossgatehall near Carberry...The route should still be passable with care but please take account of signage and directions from the contractors on the ground."

Returning to the slurry... A nice chap who is the Principal Countryside Officer for East Lothian Council has emailed me to say they are 'making contact with the local farmer to see how best to resolve the situation.'
@Rob - Sustrans route 196 links the south end of the PRP and Haddington, on quiet roads as Cyclingmollies says, well signposted from Haddington to PRP, never done it the other way.

@Rob. There are quiet roads between the end of the Pencaitland Railway Path and the Haddington end of the Longniddry Railway Path. At Longniddry the route could be combined with the coastal path.

The 54km East Lothian Rough Stuff Audax on 23 July uses some paths that could be combined with the PRP.

@laidback, I knew this was closed and mostly get my info on here?

The parking on the canongate was very poor linked to the event but in better ish news the cowgate has opened again but big metal sheets over the hole.

Sweary jim's barber was closed yesterday for the trades, which annoyed me slightly, as I was not told. However, I had a trace memory suggesting this might be possible so was not pissed off. Went through Dalry Gorgie as was fairly quiet then out stenhouse to Edinburgh park B and Q for new gut for the strimmer, home to cut grass and watch tour and cook matter paneer. So the Yin and yang in balance.

Does anyone have a favoured (preferably quiet) route after West Saulton?

Historic Scotland should just be bold enough to actually close all roads in Holyrood Park so families could get use of it without having to enter events.

NCN tunnel was closed with no apparent bike diversion. Sure it was on web somewhere though but not this forum AFAIK.
Was frustated at myself for not knowing I could not take a tour down there with visitors to city.
Had to work round via Skelf.

Yesterday afternoon the Pencaitland Railway Path was full of... slurry.

A section of track, near to Cousland, was completely covered with it. It was proper minging. A few other muddy bits too. I fix my street-ed the slurry section today, and washed my bike.

Between Ormiston and Saltoun Station large stretches of the path have been resurfaced and widened, the trees have been cut back and an old pond has been revealed near Ormiston Station. It's impressively smooth. Pretty amazing really if you remember how it was.

This reminds me of the Water of Leith path from Balerno/Currie into town. We never use it. (Sometimes on a blue moon in high summer I rode up it to get a gravel workout).

I take the main road, I can't be bothered to get everything so covered in crap. SWMBO used to ride everywhere when we lived in town, doesn't ride because of the poor state of the path (surface/lighting).

The path from Crossgatehall to Saltoun Station has deteriorated to the point where it's almost as bad as it was before the work was done last year. The puddles are back. The surface has been washed away in places. And the leaf mulch has turned into mud. That bollard is a serious danger. They have repaired the wooden handrail on the bridge though.

It's pretty rough and ready. Not that useful for commuting but I prefer it to the road in the dark when I'm heading in the uphill direction (and before it's annual flooding of course).

I notice a new stretch of shared use path East Lothian Council have just built between Ormiston & Tranent (a genuinely useful route), must about around 1m wide at the most.
Seems a bit strange to be building something so tight from scratch.. I guess they don't want to narrow the road any.

There's a bridge on the Pentcaitland path with a collapsible steel bollard. It's been laid down, right in the middle of the path , just on the downhill ramp off the bridge, and nicely hidden by a clump of grass. Just waiting to catch several unsuspecting cyclists unawares.
