The Windy Slack - Gladhouse route uses the core path network in both Midlothian - 8_58 on Map 23 and Scotthish Borders - 195 in Area 12.
But see 'note 1 Representation on this map is no guarantee that it is usable for all types of access.'

Also I can't vouch for the sanity of any landowners/gamekeepers in the area, or how well the access legislation is enforced.

If heading east instead, and looking for off-road, there is the moor road (track) between Brothershiels farm & Fala which is rideable all the way, as an alternative to the B6368. Best after a period of dry weather as it's a bit swampy around a couple of gates.

It must have been the best part of 20 years ago so the snarling dog, at least, will be dead. Not sure about the land owner, although with blood pressure like that I don't fancy his chances.

Thanks @cb.

Jury is out, though landowner and snarling dog make me think I'd be better to head East towards Heriot and Humbie to complete my route instead...

It seems to start promisingly enough at the Gladhouse end.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1812147

But then this happens:

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1812125

Looks a bit better further east:

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4684212
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/115490

I've never walked/cycled that route so someone else may be able to say differently.

I do remember trying to do a little circular walking route near Mauldslie years ago which probably involved the first wee section of the route.

We tried to cut across country to pick up another track to the west but were chased down by the furious land owner (from Mauldslie?) who chased us down at speed, off road in his 4x4 (with snarling dog in the passenger seat), who told us we couldn't walk there as we were putting nesting birds at risk.

Once he saw us returning with tails between our legs he roared off again, crushing another selection of fauna beneath his tyres.

This was pre-land reform of course.

Quick Query - looking at the Spokes Midlothian Map and planning a wee route for a future run.

At the bottom of the Spokes map, there is a dotted path between the B7007 (NCN Route 1) at Windy Slack across to Gladhouse. Does anyone know if it is cycleable?
