Fountainbridge Canal Initiative - Winter Newsletter now out:

http://www.fountainbridgeci.org.uk/sites/www.fountainbridgeci.org.uk/files/Winter%202016%20Newsletter-1_0.jpg

No mention of cycling, towpath widths, etc. Hmmm...

Note: Terrible website. All the newsletters seem to get dumped under "background docs": http://www.fountainbridgeci.org.uk/node/8 And the newsletter has been uploaded as a jpeg (and yet I have seen a pdf copy of it!)

Oh, and 3 pages of the newsletter are missing!

"I also get the impression local councillors weren't aware the land was going to be sold."

I'm sure they are now though...

Of course it's not the council selling it, just one of their 'arms-length' companies.

I've been looking in to this. Not easy given there are multiple planning apps for the same bit of land.

The old Tartan Club was originaly planned to be student accommodation. The plot of land was recently sold and I haven't heard if the plans will now be changed. Wouldn't supprise me if the same developer buys both the Tartan Club bit of land and this new CEC bit.

This appears to be the bit of land that is up for sale - and I think it was already earmarked for a hotel. Interesting to note that the bit up for sale was never included in CEC's latest plans. I also get the impression local councillors weren't aware the land was going to be sold.

"It is a big site but how many more houses and hotles do we need?"

Well as you know, great need for more dwellings - not just for students and 'executives'.

As for the word affordable...

When the hippies were there they made it into a nice park?

There's a surprise.

Shortsighted, short-term financial gain, indicative of the reality of LA finances generally.

CEC may or may not be dealing with things better than some councils.

I'm sure community buyout is 'impossible'.

An update on developments from Fountainbridge Canalside Initiative:
extract:
"Canalside site up for sale
The original plan was that ownership of the site would be retained in the public sector, but the Council has decided to raise finance by selling the section to the east of Gilmore Park (beside the lift-bridge). We had all hoped that, fronting onto the canal, this part of the site would be used for a substantial building with a cultural use. Sadly, this space has now been put up for sale to a developer for a hotel. EDI are currently in negotiation with one of five bidders. FCI is very disappointed by this, and remains very keen to ensure that the site has a vibrancy and usefulness for local people."

The EDI Group are to showcase a £200m proposal to transform Edinburgh’s former McEwan’s Brewery, Fountainbridge, into a canal side community of 438 homes.

India Quay will comprise a mix of apartments and three bedroom colony style homes all of which will be professionally managed in the long-term under the build to rent model.

Lynn Smith, head of development at The EDI Group, said: “Bringing a long-standing vacant site back into use will not only improve the city centre’s built environment it will also deliver a significant economic boost creating jobs and attracting inward investment.

“Having listened to what local people would like to see developed, we’re pleased to be submitting our detailed planning application and look forward to working with our partners to create a thriving community of high quality homes, shops, restaurants and mixed use spaces for future generations and visitors to enjoy.”

An information event will take place this 10 May between 15:00 and 20:00 at Akva, 129 Fountainbridge, ahead of a detailed planning application later this month.
