I "behaved like traffic" this morning, and it did not go well.

I was crossing the Water of Leith on Great Junction Street, heading North, and being careful to "behave like traffic", I took the right hand of the two lanes, as the two lanes are marked with lane indication big white arrows, and I was planning to turn right at the junction. Cars coming the other way, proceeded to cross the central line, and pass two buses that were at the stop/ waiting for the stop. The drivers simply pointed their cars at me, as though there was no traffic there at all. The driver of the first car did eventually come to a halt rather than wipe me out, and wound down her window to complain. I pointed at the arrows, which are there to guide traffic. After some time, the front bus departed, and I moved on, leaving some confusion in my wake. I did point out to the lady that she was on the wrong side of the road.

I agree that "acting like traffic" is not a bad survival strategy. However, "traffic" is not "polite and assertive". It's aggressive and self-interested, upsetting other people is practically a requirement.

"Act like traffic, politely..." - I don't understand the sentence. Traffic is a collective phenomenon, how can it be "polite"? And how can an individual act like a collection?

Min, it all depends on whether you think of drivers and learners as twodistinct stages of the lifecycle or one as a subsection of the other.

I think they are the same bulbs used for the "park anywhere" lights that are operated by the button with the little red triangle on it so will have been lit whenever the occupants need to <strike>park illegally</strike> just pop in for a few minutes?

Mirror, signal, manoeuvre is the drill that's taught to drivers.

It is? :-/

@crowriver I like to think of them more as vestigial structures that haven't been selected against in the population but are no longer functional.

I've no idea what Cyclescheme is or what their angle is, but their advice seems to me quite sensible. Ok, it's a bit vehicularist, but that is the reality that most commuters face. Of course the priorities should be much much better infrastructure but this might encourage more people to try cycling to work or school. I have the impression that even in cycling nirvanas like The Netherlands, there are still some residential streets where there is no separate cycling infrastructure, so good cycling tips (and I think the above is good, calm, unpatronising stuff) are welcome.

"don't depend on them"

Ah, the indicator. That rare species which seems to be mainly extinct,. The dead unlit carcasses are to be found, perfectly preserved like fossils, on millions of motor vehicles, many of them stilborn, having never had a current pass through their bulbs.
