Belfast are building segregated cycleways - in fact they've even been upgrading one (known as the bin lane) because it was being abused by businesses putting out their rubbish. Obviously they've got a long way to go and they're not perfect, but the city does appear to have taken on board what is needed and has started implementing it...

That path looks very pretty in a very meandery sort of way. On the other hand, Belfast has some enormously wide roads that are given over entirely to cars. Many cyclists seem to prefer the pavement and I can't much blame them. It looks as if it would be super easy to take one lane away on each for segregated cycleways. I hope they are going to consider that in the future, otherwise what is the point?

"The Comber Greenway in east Belfast could attract hundreds of new cyclists if a £550,000 EU-funded project is successful.

Belfast has been chosen for a major investment to promote cycling as a mode of transport, including an Active Travel Hub at Holywood Arches, smart cycle storage units and an e-bike pilot programme."
