Well though this is a shift in priorities/goalposts, it does actually make sense. Inversneggie for example should be an ideal place to cycle: flat mostly, compact, outlying rural suburbs not that far away. Just needs some segregated infrastructure to keep the Dukes of Hazzard types from killing/maiming cyclists...

"

Transport minister Humza Yousaf has said he remains committed to the Scottish Government's "vision” of 10 per cent of journeys by bike by 2020, with a special focus on urban areas where cycling is often already higher than the 2 per cent national average.

"

http://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/bike-lift-planned-to-haul-edinburgh-cyclists-up-the-mound-1-4379896

RIGHT : So the new strategy is to make sure a few places will be helped towards 10%(?)

@Morningsider, aye, depressing isn't it?

Come to think of it, I can't see either of the Edinburgh schemes getting funded. I predict Inversneggie or Stirling for the cash bonus this year.

Gotta share the crumbs from the big boys' table around a bit to paupers from the regions...

Cycling projects forced to fight over the scraps, yet again.

In period 2007 - 2017 the Scottish Government invested £8,223,600,000 in the trunk road network. (1) That's £1530.54 per person.

In the same period, it invested £249,050,000 in active travel (2). That is £46.35 per person, or 3% of the total invested in trunk roads.

The Glasgow 2016 community links plus winner got just £3.25m, equivalent to 37 metres of the M74 completion project (a snip at £692m for 8km).

Every short listed community links plus bidder over the last two years could be funded by the Government for the cost of the A737 Dalry Bypass (estimated cost £38m) - a 3.8km road around a town with a population under 6000.

Wow, more annoyed than I thought about this - a nice cycle home should help.

(1) http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/parliamentarybusiness/28877.aspx?SearchType=Advance&ReferenceNumbers=S5W-06593&ResultsPerPage=10
(2) http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/parliamentarybusiness/28877.aspx?SearchType=Advance&ReferenceNumbers=S5W-02501&ResultsPerPage=10 (plus an additional £39.2m for this year)

Possibly a shrewd move by Sustrans. Expect the opposition to E-W route will ramp up when it comes to the TRO stage. Main risk is to Roseburn-Haymarket section. Could fall victim to a new administration in May (SNP minority with Conservative support on case by case basis?). Section on York Place will presumably go ahead anyway with planning gain from the St James redevelopment? Maybe also St Andrew Square. George Street etc. part of a different project anyway, so presumably may proceed at its own pace.

The other schemes hopefully less contentious and maybe one of the Edinburgh ones will be funded through this competition? We can but hope...

West Edinburgh Mini Holland and Meadows to George Street get through.

But not E-W City centre route - not sure what that means for its funding. Assume it has to go through the normal year by year CL scheme

I expect The Roseburn to Leith Walk project to be built regardless of this funding. After all it isn't new money it's just the SNP trying to look impressive by pompously announcing 150 metre's worth of the trunk road budget for something more meaningful.

The Council will just need to apply through the usual matched funding lottery and hope there's still enough crumbs to go around.

So the councils who didn't win can all now breathe a collective sigh of relief?

Phew! Me made it looked like we were trying hard on the old active travel, but at least we don't have to actually try and do anything now. Peter Suits can think he's been victorious and be given the freedom of the Paradise Sauna by a grateful community council, the council don't have to try and face down the Roseburn swampies when they chain themselves infront of the diggers, the cyclists can carry on quietly trying to get from A to B without being flattened by a Donaldsons tipper truck.

Do these projects just get filed away now never to be looked at again? What a waste of a lot of design and consultation effort.

If the Scottish Government was serious about active travel then it would find the cash for all of these projects. How much are we talking about in total - £20m? That's a rounding error in the trunk roads budget.

Causey project - As no one replied to my comment above, presumably no one on the Forum knows more about it or has had any involvement? Someone from spokes planning group is meeting the architects soon, but I think it would be very worthwhile for any individuals who live or work in the area to contact the project as well, on their own behalf, to try and ensure it is cycle-friendly. Given that all this cash has now been allocated, work will presumably start this year (maybe soon?) and it would be tragic if it didn't do the maximum to improve cycling conditions - or even worsened them in some respects. I'm sure the project overall will be a big 'people-friendly' improvement for the area, but the planning has gone on for years with many different ideas coming and going, and cycling issues are one area where there has always been uncertainty (and I think differing views).

Roseburn-Leith Walk project - Council applied to the Community Links Plus competition for the construction cash, not to the basic Community Links. Think outcome of CL+ to be announced in August.

Causey project - Yes, very costly! Also as we understand it, Buccleuch St will be narrowed at that point, with the cycle lanes ending at either end of the narrowing, so possibly a kind of slow-speed pinch point. Spokes has made this point many times, but plans I think unchanged (I haven't personally attended the Causey exhibitions, but so I was told - maybe someone knows more). Also unsure if will be a smoother surface through Crosscauseway or will still all be the same cobbles - relaid but they are very rounded ones! This was very unclear at earlier stages of the project. Presumably now finalised?

37000 To do something with the cobbles at Fountainbridge? Is that before or after the area has been redeveloped?

I suspect it will be done in the next year, then ripped up again the year after. Similar happened with the new Burghimuir school - they'd just finished laying a new path when they builders started and ripped it up again.

Yes, chdot, that was my reaction too...

I'm doing fine with select and paste with a mouse. Horrible website if that really is the only way to see the information, though.
