It has a throttle I think ( not legal now on new sales ). Electric Transport Company in Bristol did fit one to a Bakfiets in Edinburgh. Only thing is that fork may need changed so front brake becomes disc (from drum).
ECT would quote and supply - bike could come here to unite the bits. I also have mail from another convertor based here. They could quote. Pm or email me.

so if you electrify the front wheel, does it still do the thing of kicking in when you're pedalling hard or is it on all the time?

Front wheel is best yes. Ideally a crank drive bike is best option but the PB frame won't allow that (yet).

I presume a front wheel motor would be simplest: no need to mess around with the gears then. Something like this?

Uses a Sturmer Archer 8 speed internal hub. Already uses a 34t ring to a 20t sprocket. The SA was optimised for small wheeled bikes. Alfine is different but can't get a drum brake version for the PB. PB is very much an SA bike here. Euro rental ones use other set ups with Shimano roller brakes.

Smaller front chainring would be a lot simpler, no?

Hi Sally

I can ask Bike Spark here. He's done several retro fits.
There is an electro version of PB under dev but most effort of brand is on fleet hire in continent and US.

Just visiting my parents and my Mum is reporting increasing difficulty in getting her beloved PaperBike up a hill (the hill in question is quite sharp and leads to a blind bend and cars often come around the corner on the wrong side of the road which makes her nervous and she can no longer stand up on the pedals for extra oomph). Anyone (LaidBack?) know what the options would be for retrofitting an e-assist onto it? She quite likes the idea of an extra boost when needed. She's got the one with hub gears, if that makes any difference
