She also knew in advance exactly where we should stop to regroup, or which detours to take if we were running too close to another group etc.</p> <p>I filmed a lot of it so I could replay it and try to memorise the route, turns and landmarks. I also studied the route file. And *still* I had to rely on my Garmin a lot, which in turn was hopelessly unreliable in itself!</p> <p>Ride leading is much trickier than it looks, and I wish I could pull it off as effortlessly and brilliantly as Ulli. I was the person with the p****ure near Seton Sands. It was only the 2nd I've had in years of riding around Edinburgh, so it was typical bad luck to get one on the Night Ride. Great company, good chat and an atmosphere you just can't beat!</p> <p>If anyone is ever in Gifford then I can highly recommend the Lanterne Rouge cafe, who kindly stayed open and laid on soup, bread, flapjacks, energy bars and hot drinks for over 60 cyclists who arrived in three waves. We enjoyed their normal daytime fare and cake three Sundays ago during a route recce ride too - lovely stuff &amp; lovely staff.</p> <p>A big thanks to Kim and Ulli from EdFOC for organising the event, support and food. I'll be there again next year ;-) </p>
