Definitely a high-side crash after overcooking, you can see the rear wheel lock up and skid.

But there most certainly is a gutter there, a number of riders, Van Vleuten included, who ended up lying in it. Pictures of Gertain Thomas show it very clearly (he crashed at the same place). Gutter was a good 7 or 8 inches deep, and foot and a bit wide, with the kerb behind it.

Van Vleuten apparently with three small cracks in vertebrae, and a severe concussion. It was the fact she didn't move when she hit, and when the second placed rider went through she was still in the exact same position, that had a lot of people worried.

Boardman very outspoken at the time, he'd tempered his comments a little later on the highlights show, probably can't get away with being so vocal on the BBC...

Hope she is ok, I saw the crash live and she was a good bit ahead of the American who was caught so I am not sure she would have been caught on the line though hard to say until the flat how much was left in the tank. The Dutch team worked well with Vos acting as domestique, stocking up on water bottles for the others, the two others in the final grouping so you felt they would win.

I agree with Le soigneur that the crash was caused by braking hard and losing the wheel. I did this in the Lake District and went over the bars in a similar style but more slowly and I landed in bushes not hard concrete gutter. She was not moving and Boardman was as ever very measured and struggling to keep commentating as they did not know if she was ok or not.

Armistead had a puncture early on at the exact moment that pooley went for a breakaway and then Harris got a tongue lashing from armistead for not going back to help her work back to the peloton. The pace was fairly sedate for chunks afterwards so this may not have made any difference but compares poorly with Dutch team tactics.

There was a kerb, not a gutter. As I saw it, she overcooked a bend, braked & locked up the back, skidded then countersteered & highsided into the kerb.
You can see on the report stills how she loses the back wheel, countersteers & endovers..

I saw the crash broadcast live - it looked really horrible, and she wasn't moving afterwards. So if, as quoted on the BBC here, she is "OK", that's a big relief.

Chris Boardman was commentating and has some strong things to say in the linked article.

Van Vleuten was leading and charging down the hill but I think her front wheel caught the gutter. She sort of jackknifed and was flung instantly onto the concrete kerb. Hearing that she was taken to hospital, regained consciousness but was in shock.

Only watched last twenty Kms. But had been plenty of spills and thrills. Coverage not like tour but also no one seen put by Tv motorbike.

Several riders were very unlucky.

I watched it this morning, skipping forward for thirty minutes every now and then, six hours was a bit too much commitment for me.

I don't know if there was a webpage tracking the cyclists if you were watching it live, but watching on catch up I found it pretty confusing. The commentators seemed to find it pretty confusing too if they were trying to comment on people between the peloton and the leading group. The cameras missed most of the really pivotal moments.

Still, it wasn't a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.
