The part of Glasgow I grew up in was known as Little England because all the streets were named after English towns.

In my old job I encountered an estate somewhere in the west midlands with names based around small native wild animals. When I lived in Montague Street it was sometimes difficult to get taxi drivers to admit it was in Newington.

If the Edinburgh version is due in September I assume it's a re-issuing. There's a copy in BHF in Dunfermline available for anyone. It doesn't appear to be a new item either.

we played a version of the edinburgh taxi game while on holidys this year. it was okay; but a bit dull.

one of the most upsetting things about the roseburn meeting i attended was the locals jeering phil noble when he admitted struggling to put the right name to the various bits of road there.

The grouping of streets with the same prefix (e.g. Roseburn * or Cramond *) is apparently pretty much unique to Edinburgh.

I found this quite remarkable when I learned this. Of course I now expect lots of counter examples to be offered.

In Roseburn there are Roseburn Drive, Avenue, Gardens, Crescent, Place, Terrace. I would be hard put to say exactly which one is which off the top of my head.

As for the Newtown - because of its grid layout & the sameness of the streets I find it impossible to give directions there.

@jonty, that's a good idea for a game.

Googling for the same brought me to this great list of bed time reading - ideal for swatting up on street names.

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/download/326/public_roads_in_edinburgh

It's interesting to see which streets haven't been adopted by the council (i.e. not maintained).

E.g. Cramond Brig and Craighouse Park (which explains the surface).

Has anyone ever made a game using Open Street Maps or something else where you have to guess the name of a highlighted street the place you live? I feel like it ought to exist but I can't find it.

A couple of guys who used to help run Scout Post knew, I would reckon, every single street name in Edinburgh, including the collective names for blocks of new-build flats.
Also good at reading squiggly handwriting.

I feel my knowledge should be much better given I've lived all my life in the city and love pouring over maps, but it's surprisingly poor.

I don't venture into the big smoke that much and also visualise places rather than remember names, so am generally lost like Dougal.
e.g "that bumpy potholey wee road with cafe Victor Hugo on it that runs parallel to the main road through the meadows", but couldn't tell you the name.

"No, I regularly don't have a clue where most of the roads mentioned even within this forum actually are."

I suspect realistically true for most people.

I have lived/cycled here, and stared at maps, for long enough to have a good idea of most parts of town, but am not keeping up with the street names of all the new estates.
