I've recovered four bikes down there - all along west shore road.

I wasn't able to carry out a proper search, on foot, but did drive along there, quite a few places that a bike could be hidden.

The couple have now returned home down south, picked up by the guy's dad who told me it was his bike and his pride and joy. :(

Hopeful that some are recovered le_soigneur. And whilst I might feel like carrying the nails to the top of Beinn a'Ghlo for I Were Right that's a sad story in that link.

(Not having much success in getting the quote function to work)

Just go on the book of faces, here is a machine we got CEC to recover a few months ago.
Also look on FB for TRIM, a lot of residents complaining about the joybikers. Incl the fatality of one of them.

Unfortunately this will remain endemic to North Edinburgh unless and until the 'Justice System' gives a toss.

I've recovered four bikes down there - all along west shore road.
If you and your friends can put some nettle proof jeans on there is still a good chance you can get the bike back as the scrotes will use is as a joyride until it breaks or fuel runs out.

Generally any flattened fencing that will fit a bicycle will also fit a motorbike so be thorough, you still have time.

@morepathsplease

It's nothing new. Bike thefts tailed off a bit when smartphones came in, but seem to have picked up again.

There was a spate round our way about five years ago when a pair of fire brigade cutters got nicked off an engine. (That's why the kids set fire to bins and then pelt the firefighters with bottles...trying to get the cutting gear.) Whole police division mobilised to get the cutters back as forty bikes got nicked in a fortnight.

I'd nail them all to the top of Beinn a'Ghlo in a heartbeat.

le_soigneur - that is some link. Looks like this has been going on for at least four years. I'd love to know the stats for these kinds of thefts across the city, assuming it's possible to pinpoint where the thieves are from, and whether West Pilton and the North of Edinburgh generally suffers a higher rate of motorbike theft in particular.

From @le_soigneur's link;

"a “midnight youth” project which aims to prevent teenagers from being lured into bike theft through pastimes such as fishing"

I of course would prevent them from being lureed into bike theft by abject terror at the prospect of being staked out naked on a remote mountain top for the ravens.

You really need an immobiliser, tracker & Gold standard lock on a moto & kept in a garage with a ground anchor these days.
If the bellboy at the hotel can let the Pilton Massive know there are a bunch of ignition-only bikes in town, it is a warning for anyone,

@morepathsplease Sorry about this theft: sadly it is not uncommon in North Edinburgh. I've also experienced the police's lack of interest in reviewing cctv, but I know they've got quite a bit to do. I've often wondered if they could allow the victim of crime to look at the tapes to spot the criminals as I've always wanted to act out that TV trope, "Stop there. Wind it back a bit...that's him."

@morepathsplease

Edinburgh's youth joyriders also watch the box. They are forensically aware and burn any vehicle they have taken. It's an unintended consequence of DNA technology.

Bits of the bike panniers have been found in the local area. A story of two bikes seen breaking a red light, one doing a wheelie, in front of a police car with no pursuit. This is my first experience of motorbike theft and, from responses so far, it seems that this is very much not a one-off, with opportunistic thefts occurring on a regular basis. Sounds like joyriders in this case rather than being loaded into the back of a van.

The bike was parked in front of a busy bus stop and I assumed that the police would be interested in checking cctv but I must be watching too much drama on the box.

There was a burnt-out motorbike leaning against the wall nearest the Chancelot path at the Fiveways junction yesterday, but re-reading your post it's unlikely to have been theirs as I probably passed it around 4.30-ish and it wasn't freshly burned.

Fingers crossed they get it back.

Please give my condolences to your guests. Theft of two-wheelers is very upsetting. I hope they get the bike back, but they should certainly be prepared not to see it again.

It's a long shot I know but...

We have guests that arrived by motorbike just before 4pm yesterday. They went out for a few hours and came back to find that their bike had been stolen - it was parked on the pavement opposite The Old Chain Pier pub (out of the way of pedestrians - it's a widened pavement). This was obviously an opportunistic theft but I still can't believe that it should happen at a time when there would usually be a fair bit of activity with plenty of people walking by and there is outside seating at the OCP but there were a few heavy showers around then. It's a bit of a sickening welcome to Edinburgh. Anyhow, just posting this in case anyone happened to be going that route and might have noticed something.
