Just a heads-up that there's been a paint spillage on the Innocent Path between Craigmillar and Duddingston. It appears to be white water-based emulsion so managed to wipe the worse of it off but thought it worth putting out the bat-signal.

Branch loppers were borrowed from Meadowbank, but I use the Portobello one more often.

They're the same organisation, and also have a place in Leith and a cargo bike delivery service to allow tools to be picked up/dropped off in Colinton.

Which tool library did you use? I see one near Meadowbank now on cut through to Lochend. Had cargo bikes outside.

Decided to continue my week of good deeds by borrowing a pair of branch loppers from the tool library and having arguments with various trees along the Innocent path. Hopefully fewer people need to duck whilst cycling along it now.

Quite a detour but the issue is getting under the railway again and also the massive building works happening in all the bits shown as grass on the old aerial shot spokes have posted.

At Oman’s you can turn left and just go straight along to niddriemills primary school if it was not for all the new houses and the new version of castle Brae high school, being constructed.

Someone must have some updates(?)

All emails to council officers involved were politely responded to, along the lines of "Yes...but no. We consulted."

Some loose bricks have been replaced. Some haven't. Some have been replaced with even lumpier bits of tar.

A crude analysis of Strava data suggests no effect on cyclist speeds.

Chicanes are all still there, but the council's active travel team are apparently going to conduct a city-wide review of chicanes, bollards etc. when resources allow.

Warning - glass on the Innocent. Somewhere on the east end between the tunnel and Bingham. My rule is never to use the eastern half of the Innocent when it's wet. But I keep doing it when I can't face the traffic. The risk of glass punctures is too high though and on a wet day you can't see the glass to avoid it. If it were cars getting so many punctures it would get fixed. I saw two others with the same problem.

I don't know why I bothered, I knew even before I started I would get a bland, do-nothing response like this. I really feel like CEC is proactively anti-cyclist.

Its only NCR#1, so who would they even bother to consult Sustrans or Spokes - seems crazy.

I refer to your correspondence below with regards to the consultation exercise that was undertaken for the Magdelene Glen improvements.

There was an extensive consultation process for the park improvements that was carried out in several stages over 2 years.

The first stage of consultation was designed to identify the what location within the park local resident and park users wanted the new play area to be installed. To obtain as many views as possible local residents were sent a letter and staff engaged with people in the park to make them aware of the project and complete a survey. Posters were also erected in the park asking for opinions via a web page or by letter. The results of this consultation allowed us to develop more detailed plans.

The second stage of the consultation was to present a detailed plan, developed from the comments received from the first stage of the consultation, to the community. Again these design were posted within the park itself. We attended public meetings where attendees expressed their views on the equipment and other park related issues. One of the major issues raised at these meetings was the speed and inconsideration of some cyclists.

From the comments received from stages one and two of the consultation process, some refinements were made to plan, specifically measures to reduce the risk of pedestrian/cyclist conflict. This was then circulated to the community and agreed.

I have attached a couple of pictures of the current blocks in place. As you can see the up stand present is minimal. This would be acceptable for a pedestrian dropped kerb on the footway to allow anyone with mobility issues to easily traverse. The upstand is also within the tolerance of corduroy paving surface which is commonly used on shared and segregated cycle paths on the public road.

While I appreciate that neither Spokes or Sustrans were directly involved in the consultation, it did reach a wide audience. I do however, note your comment and in future we will ensure that both are added as standard consultees on any future improvements works in parks where cyclists are permitted.

With regards to Magdelene Glens status as a community park is defined in the city of Edinburgh Council Open Space Stratgey which can be found at this link, http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20178/park_management_and_rules/427/open_space_strategy.

I hope the above is of assistance.

Thanks

It's also a Core Path (CEC5) and restricting non-motorised responsible access (i.e. the no-cycling signage on the spur to Asda) will require some defense, otherwise it will be a landowner unduly restricting access.

The Land Reform Act resulted in the removal of this signage from the Meadows and it should be possible to challenge its reintroduction, or at least require an explanation of this retrograde step.

The removal of the vegetation and consequential improved sightlines should make responsible cycling on this spur easier rather than harder!

While a complaint might seem futile (I doubt anything would directly come of it), kicking up a stink means it is highly unlikely that bricks will ever be put in a path again - more bother than it is worth.

The important bit is to make sure councillors area aware of the complaint and the council's reaction to it. Sweeping it under the carpet is all but impossible if elected members are grilling officers as to why they are having to waste their time dealing with nonsense they could do without.

Good point about the complaint focusing on consultation. In my experience of bureaucratic complaints procedures (from being a member of such a bureaucracy) they tend to concentrate on whether the procedures were followed, rather than the actual merits of the case.

In this case, I think it's disingenuous of Scott Thomson to argue that it's a park and nothing else. It is clearly an important active travel route as well (NCR 1 no?) So were any active travel groups consulted? Sustrans, Spokes, or any of the active travel people in the Council?

"Council's complaints procedure"

Apart from the merits(?) of what's been done, I think it's worth the complaint about the consultation which forgot about existing (path) users.

Scott @ CEC no longer wishes to discuss the Innocent path works with me and has pointed me towards the Council's complaints procedure 'if I wish to take it further'.

My bike is a folding 20 inch wheeler so not dis-similar to a kid's bike. Those shoogly bricks are deeply uncomfortable on her and I'd be very wary of them in the wet. It's a matter of time before they cause an accident.
