Vans driving easy down the two-way cycle bit on the north side this morning. Also pedestrians only looking west at the Castle Street zebra.

“Try Rugby” Fan Village in Edinburgh City-Centre
The European Rugby Champions Cup Final is the biggest club game in world rugby and every year the tournament organisers set up a fan village in the centre of the host city. This year, the “Try Rugby” Fan Village will be situated on George Street and Castle Street (leading from George Street down to Princes Street) in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. As well as areas where fans can test their rugby skills, there are plenty of food outlets, bars and sitting areas to meet and soak up the unique atmosphere of Edinburgh on a major rugby weekend.

each to their own I guess.

Made the mistake of trying to get up the south bit of Castle Street, it's all blocked off for some sort of big screen rugby sponsored by a Turkish airline (I didn't realise they were that mad for it over there).

There was a nice wide, 2-way lane for bikes on the North side of the 2 westmost blocks. There was no signs but a marshall showed me the way. It is only coned off though, so watch out for the lane being squeezed ever narrower as has happened in previous years.

[NO ENTRY] EXCEPT CYCLES
between Charlotte Square and almost Frederick Street. Something to do with rugby and airlines?

It was supposed to be a 2-way lane, at least 3 metres wide, on the North side according to the promoters!

First block at west/Charlotte Square end was closed off this morning for the start of erecting the wintervalmas lighting extravaganza. There was a reasonably wide cycling lane, well signed and with 2 marshalls at each end, formed by cones and tape on one side and metal barriers on the other. This was wide enough to pass an oncoming cyclist, except at the bit where the Fisher's Laundry lorry had somehow squeezed into the street and moved the cones out of the way to get in/out of the drivers side of the cab.

The tape though was a bit silly as it stopped any westbound cyclists entering off Charlotte Square getting into the lane, and they couldn't get around the laundry lorry either given it was tight against the cones and the kerb.

"But, but.....nobody cycles in mid-winter, do they? Come on! And those that do, well we don't really want them near our Winter Festivus celebratory extravaganza. They'll just ruin the family atmosphere with their sweaty lycra and ridiculous helmets."

Maybe they'll set it in a little from the end of each section of the road so that ticketless pedestrians aren't herded out into the perpendicular roads. Maybe there'll be another cyclist diversion along Hill/Thistle/Young Streets.

I assume "access maintained for bikes" and then blocked off by ignorant contractors.

Given the shambles on the royal mile I would say absolutely no way of "cycle access maintained". They could barely manage pedestrian access.

For a few weeks pedestrians were being diverted round Parliament square
