So the official campaign to get more people on their bikes is telling folk they have to be 'adventurous' to take the bike to work.</p> <p>Has there been a genuinely good government cycle campaign in the last ten years? Nice Way Code; that ginger kid helmet hair poster; the give cyclists room poster that suggests to drivers you just need to be a child's arm length away; now this. C'mon people. However that is just 1 in every 250 people in Scotland, and if the Scottish Government is serious about 10% of all journeys being by bike then it needs to invest properly in safe cycling infrastructure. This has been the policy all along. The SNP even wanted to cut cycle funding when they first got into government. Only concerted lobbying prevented that. Let's face it, active travel is not only low on the list of priorities for the SNP, they just don't seem to believe in it at all. Whether this represents "capture" by vested interests in the big road construction companies, bureaucratic inertia, or sheer bloody mindedness is not immediately clear. This SG funding is less than 10% of the the construction cost of the Dalry bypass - a fairly minor trunk road project on the route between Paisley and Ayr. </p> <p>Think about it - that £35m would go a good way to providing a core cycle superhighway network for Edinburgh. Which investment produces better outcomes? To me the answer is clear - the cycle investment would provide far greater health, environmental and social benefits than a bypass around a very small town on a minor trunk road. Yet, the bypass gets the investment.
