I just bought a microwave (we need more hardware to cook xmass dinner for lots of people tomorrow) and took it home on my bike trailer.

Whilst, it was a bit hairy on the local un-gritted streets, and I was going much more slowly - it sure was fun :)

seems like my family have been doing this for almost 100 years. Here's my great grandpa with his trusty GPO bicycle on the Carlops Road in 1914.

Riding that bike, in that gear, makes us look like a bunch of softies! My grandpa told me it was a fixie

I've managed to brave it through the snow every day so far. Will be weird cycling in the daylight after my half day today though.

Check out my video here

My only snowy bit is kinda fun as there is no traffic normally and the surface is mostly hardpacked snow. The mountain biking helps as I try to keep the bike loose and let it go where it wants as long as its vaguely in the right direction. Putting the chunky tyres helps too I think - I would rather float on the surface of the snow than cut through it with the usual road tyres.

there's been no sign of gritters off of any of the main roads, so I've been avoiding the residential streets where possible. Our road is really bad - it's multiple layers of frozen snow compacted by cars, even taking it slowly the back end of the bike just slides everywhere.
Dad's max-min thermometer had -6.8 recorded overnight. The official reading from Gogarbank was -7 at 9AM. Brrrrr

Had to carry the bike from my estate yesterday and today to the main road where i hoped the gritters would have been, i don't think low profile road bike tyres are quite designed for this weather.

The greenways were fine if your in the buses tracks but try to get our of that track and its trouble. Having said that the greenways were icing up on Corstorphine road last night on the way home but the car lane was fine didn't have the nerve to sit in the car lane though so just had to take it easy on the light frosting.

setting off. Just to prove to the EEN that you catch a flashing light with a camera if you try hard enough.

made it! There was a lot more snow in my helmet vents than accumulated on the bike. Took a while to get the cleats to bind as I set off because of compacted snow that refused to melt or move.

@Chdot - naturally the readership of the EEN have hijacked that story into a "let's bash the cyclists" for him wearing shorts. Cannot comment about the lights it's perfectly feasible he had flashers and they were on the off part of the cycle when the photograph clicked.

Wow! Great photo. Seems like - wierdly - snow to the east of town was thicker than west, it's normally t'uther way around.

Commute in to South Gyle was OK, snow was falling pretty thickly at 7:15 but I generally had the road to myself and main roads were slushy enough in the tyre tracks to mean I was easily able to keep pace with the traffic. Actually took the long route round as I was enjoying myself.
Plenty of snow collected in the helmet vents and didn't melt as it landed on the windstopper I had on.

Wasn't on paths though so couldn't really stop for a photo (boo!), so until I've built my cycle camera fitting I had to make do with a "before" and "after" shot.

Realised this morning that the MTB had a puncture and I couldn't be bothered to fix it. Got offered the car, but I really wanted to ride in the snow, and figured the skinny tyres on the fixed would cut through it. That was certainly right on the virgin stuff on the Innocent Railway. Avoid the footprints and the (very few) other tyre tracks and it was easy to keep on the straight and narrow.

There was definitely ice underneath, but the amount of snow deadened it. The biggest problem was car tyre tracks which not only compressed the bottom into a more slippy surface, but also created walls that were a little harder than the untouched snow, ready to throw a whell off line. Oh, and the fact that traffic was so heavy, but because on the main routes there were just two bands of black stuff showing it was pretty much impossible to indulge in the usual filtering (some imaginative on-the-fly route planning took me away from most of the traffic.

The worst, actually, was a taxi driver sitting a foot from my back wheel as I headed downhill, then overtaking me, throwing up snow everywhere. Only to pull in to a taxi rank 200 yards or so further on. I really should have stopped to remonstrate but didn't want to ruin the good mood.
