Yeah - I can see that bikes are perhaps more visually distracting than "a crowd" in the background.

I wonder if that says something about how 'normal' bikes in a city centre look.

If it was a H&S issue, the man with the sign could tell the many pedestrians who walk on the 'cycling side' that there are likely to be cyclists at reasonable speed coming down that hill, and it might be safer to stick to the side where cyclists are not allowed.

The sign on MMW today says 'Cyclists please dismount', which is a welcome bit of courtesy. It was there at lunchtime; there was filming going on at the tables outside the cafe. Strangely, they had someone asking cyclists to not pass while the filming was actually in progress (only 2-3 minutes at a time), but not concerned at all about pedestrians passing.

Not sure "cyclists dismount" can ever be mandatory - the mandatory version of the sign being a red ring with a bike indicating that cycling is banned.

Presumably the proper use is to inform of an existing prohibition - for example, when a path ends and pavement begins (cycling already being banned on the pavement of course.) If so, it's very rarely used 'properly.'

A yellow sign with black writing is used for temporary road "advice". I.e. road closed ahead, directions for events or diversions around roadworks.

So does this mean this sign is "advice", or is it mandatory, i.e. there's a TRO or other bit of paper saying you would be causing an offence to cycle beyond it.

I think you're meant to use a red sign with white writing for temporary mandatory instructions, i.e. as you get before temporary traffic lights, or for road closures.

Cyclists Dismount signs never require anything, but that doesn't mean it's right to sail past them all going lalalala THE LAW says I'm right. Somebody rightly or wrongly has identified a risk and it's up to you to also take a moment and judge that risk.

I'd prefer if the sentiment was 'Prepare to dismount if necessary' but that's getting a bit wordy for a road sign

What does "Cyclist Dismount" actually require us to do? I've never seen a "Cyclists Remount" sign?! If there are temporary roadworks with a temporary speed restriction there's always (well nearly always!) a sign to show normal speed limit is applicable again.

If you cycle up to the sign, get off your bike and then get back on your bike have you not fulfilled what the sign has asked you to do?

I always understood that the sign was not enforceable. If they don't want cycling then a prescribed sign to indicate that would be required? Plus a TTRO?

They would proabbly need to close the path to everybody whilst actually filming for health and safety reasons, but arbitrarily closing it to cyclists seems a bit much.

It all feels a bit random. Do they get to arbitrarily (from the user's point of view) shut main roads of a morning in order to film stuff? MMW is a cyclist's main road, not some quiet little backwater.

Filming of some kind seems likely. There was a posh car parked on the pedestrian side of MMW near Peter's Yard and lots of people milling around the plaza. Incidentally, I wondered if Ewan Bremner walked past me while I was eating soup outside Peter's Yard a couple of weeks ago. I have seen him around Edinburgh on a few occasions previously, but was slightly less convinced it was him that time but certainly a fair lookalike if not.

Does anyone know why the uphill bit of MMW this morning was shut with a big Cyclists Dismount sign?

A man in a big hi-viz-jacket was standing at the crossroads, alongside the sign.

Lots of cyclists seemed to be huffing about it and getting off their bikes and walking up the hill. I turned onto NMW and took the Gifford Park route to get to North Bridge.
